The neat trick was how they made the car roll. They took a 2' piece of pipe and welded on a cap so one end was closed off. They cut a hole in the passenger side floorboard and welded the pipe to the roll cage with the open end level with the floor. A small piece of C4 was placed in the pipe and a 2' piece of telephone pole was wedged in making a small cannon shooting down. The stunt driver had a switch taped to the steering wheel connected to the charge. As he was going down the track he spun the wheel right putting the car in a slide and hit the switch. The telephone pole shot down flipping the car. There were 4 1 pound propane canisters under the car evenly spaced from front to rear with 1/4 second delay charges that fired as the car flipped making the fireball. The car rolled 8 times and came to rest on the wheels. The telephone pole was stuck in the track with the end sticking out of the ground splintered.
The TMS upper management were all out there to watch the crash. Instead they all were looking at this piece of telephone pole sticking out of the track. The NASCAR race was 2 weeks later and they had to scramble to dig up and patch the track.
This is the clip of the crash. Start at 3:55.
