When climbing down into an old cistern you are entering a confined space. Our farm has one that was about 18 ft deep made of brick. The air in the bottom of the cistern may be unable to support life! The yellow hose duct work used when laying pipe during sewer work is pumping clean air. Just something to think about. Grand father always let it rain for 30 minutes to get the sparrow poop off the metal roof. The well water had sulpher.

Depending on how much you willing to invest in this. You could use a wet switch ( like the one that detects leaks in your hot water heater ). Connect that to a timer to open a diverter valve and you wouldnt have to worry about it very much after that.
