Here's a picture of the indian(see attached).

Also was an urban legend to some extent. Rumors about free candy and such. However, some candy stores did give you a free sucker.

Go to any search engine and search for 'tootsie pop indian' and you'll get lots of hits about the legend. Fun reading.

Scruffy, we made our own butter, too. But I saw (and used) some of that margarine when we visited my maternal grandparents in Oklahoma City. Best I can remember it was in a plastic "bag" and there was a little red pellet in there that you squeezed to break it and release the color, then kneaded the package until it was thoroughly mixed.

And I think my mother went straight from the rub board to an electric wringer washer - must have skipped the gas models. I never got my hand and arm caught in the wringer, but I've seen one of my younger sisters and one of my younger brothers get caught in it. There was an awful lot of screaming going on./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Besides butch wax, I remember using brylcream (not sure on the spelling /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif). I can still smell the stuff.

In fact, there was a time when I was in high school that all the kids used large gobbs of some stuff called "dippity doo", that would hold your hair in place, but not have "that greasy look"....

GlueGuy, I'm not sure of the spelling either, but maybe Brylcreem, and didn't they have a slogan of A little dab'll do you? Came in a tube like toothpaste instead of a bottle. And I think the dippity doo came along after I got out of high school.

I think Dippity-Doo was an aqua color and came in a short, clear jar. I also think it was meant just for females. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Bird - 10-4 on "A little dab'll do ya" slogan.

Attached is an audio file of a Brylcreem and Dippity-Doo commercials.

Bird,

The margerine I recall had a red/orange dot in the middle of the plastic bag. To turn it yellow you started squeezing the bag until it all looked about the same. I used to fight with my older sisters so I could be the one to squeeze it. I still have the engine from our "kick start" washing machine. It was a second generation washer with a Briggs engine, the first ones were Maytag. The engine still runs great to this day.
Used to listen to Don McNeal and the breakfast club, eating toast with that yellow stuff on it, don't recall if I even liked it(the margerine).

Wasn't it Vitalis who countered the Brylcream ad by warning men about using the "greasy kids stuff"?
Since I'm asking about old commercials. Does anybody remember who the knockout blonde was that did the White Owl cigar ads? From somewhere back in the cobwebs I get the name Eve or maybe Evie.

I musta really lived cause I remember gas at 19 cents a gallon, 10 cent McDonald hamburgers, and baseball cards 2 packs for a nickle.

Mike,

Where did you get those sound bites? The quality was excellent. Brought back memories of B&W tv and watching all of the old shows.

yep! drive into work in the morning and gas would be way up to 21 or 22 cents a gallon, then during the day one guy would lower his price by a penny, then the next guy not to be out done by another penny, so on the way home it was down to 17 or 18 cents. i could'nt fit $3.00 worth of gas in my 55 Desoto sportsman.
