I think a data-centric provider tops out at a theoretical max of 500kbps (protocol limitation, that's 8 timeslots dedicated to data services leaving very few for voice). Most providers in the US used to advertise a 144kbps burst, but now I couldn't quickly find a datarate on AT&T's website. I know my Verizon EV-DO card (with or without compression enabled) is head and shoulders above my BlackBerry EDGE access, but with any luck whatever phone you're using may have a more advanced technology AT&T's been a little quiet about.

Funny this would come up but I've heard a lot of friends talk about wish there was a simple cell phone.

I've had an iPhone since July 3. After using it for about 2 months I feel that the hype Apple surrounded the phone with in June was NOT enough. This is an amazing piece of hardware/software. The human interface is more than they hyped.
One thought I have is how the interface will expand in the next few years. I routinely hand the phone to people and let them use it. The look on their face is fun to watch. Most people have never held anything like this in their life.
The phone works fine for me, but the other features are impressive. I connect to our wireless network at work and have high speed connections. Many businesses offer high speed wireless connections and I find them easily. The photo album is what blows peoples minds. When you tap on a picture and then expand a part of it, that is beyond most people's dreams.
I know this is verison 1.0 and I usually don't buy something this new in the life cycle, but after playing with one the weekend they rolled out, I decided I had to have one.
