That is just what I need to use DOM seamless tubing. I love the pics they are inspirational I would ask that you send more, very nice work.

Thanks Randall,
Be careful what you ask for. I must say I get a hoot out of your Jack Russel hijacking and guarding your ride.
Second thanks for the H/F metal cutting circular saw thread and link. Who would have thought you could cut through metal with what has traditionally been exclusive to carpentry. Someday metal working will be as "easy" as whittling balsa wood. With Plasma cutters I think it already is, not only that welds cool faster than glue dries if that makes any sense.

OK here are a few ideas for greasable grapple bushings, and a way to keeps pins from rotating:

First bore, die grind, drill, hole saw, file or whatever it takes to get your bushing(s) to fit, press fit is best if you can achieve it. If not no biggie, just be creative in clamping them square prior to welding:

Making a decent weld around a bushing takes a steady fast hand, lots and lots of practice, and lots of practice.

Grease-able bushings for grapple jaws, first grind a flat spot, then drill to tap for your favorite size grease fitting:

Next anchor the pins to keep them from rotating:

With any luck the jaws with bushings might come out looking something like this:

Thats all I know about making bushings.

Your work looks professional quality. I appreciate your examples they are a great help. I do not have a lathe so I will have to work around the press fit. I will be ordering the DOM tubing as soon as I get the amount figured. The Jack Russle is a great dog to have around he is a mans small dog even though he doesnt know he is small. This dog is a real hunting dog as well, he is always up for a good mouse fight and I have seen him take on a ground hog and win. Thanks again Larry

This saw uses a blade that looks like a carbide tipped blade but is made specifically for metal. Its metal particles are shaved of and are about as long as the plate is thick or a little smaller and they aren't airborne so no dust to worry about but thanks for mentioning it.

What rpm do these blades turn at?

How do they last?

Guglio, thanks for the pics - very professional.

This saw turns at 3500 RPM and I might add replacement blades are available for $17 at HF I have made quit a few cuts with the original that came on the saw. I have cut plate thicker than it is supposed with no ill effects note in the firs pic the red plate is 3/4" and that was cut with this saw. Look closely at the red piece toward the table it is setting on and you can see where it cut through a weld as well as the 3/4" plate, I was impressed.

Interesting??? I went to the HF Website and searched for Item Number, 8898-ZZZ, and got this:

"The Specifications for this item are not currently available online, or the item has been discontinued"

Yet, when I opened the link that dex3361 had in his post, I was able to bring up the HF Website with a picture and all related information.

I'm pretty sure these saws can only be purchased at a retail store. Thats why you cannot find it online. The web link takes you to the item, however the link listing is for in store purchase only. I know it sounds kind of confusing. There are many cases where a flier lists an item that is only available at a store, there are links to view it online and create a local "shopping list" to take to a brick and mortar store, but cannot be ordered on the web.

I think this is because the first site is for the catalog and the site I posted is for the stores. I would take the # to your local store and ask the to stock them. They are good to help in our HF store.

I picked up the Harbor Freight Metal Cutting Circ Saw #8897 and it does a great job. I hope they come out with a 14 Chop saw style with this blade and RPM. I cut some 1/4" mild steel plate at a rate of 6" in about 40 seconds and even tried some 3/4" and at a rate of 6" in about 120 seconds. I bought the warranty as I am getting ready to start the fab of a grapple and I will put it to an endurance test on that project alone.

Any problem with kickback using that saw?

Thanks DEON,
I'm no machinist, but rather a hobbyist machinist wannabe. I get by with just enough to satisfy my tractor project creativity. DOM is available from just about any metal supplier. If they don't stock it they can order it. As with just about any metal it comes in 20 to 21 foot lengths. DOM is rather expensive and usually sold by the inch to the end user. DOM size is specified by OD and wall thickness (not ID) so the ID can vary a few thousandths. The OD and ID are very smooth and uniform throughout the length so it makes for great bushing material. DOM is what hydraulic cylinders and bushings are made of as well as the cylinder end cross tubes so there are many sizes to choose from.
Rems are usually sold at a discount, I buy rems that are anywhere from a few inches to a few feet long. As an example 1.5" OD DOM X .25"wall (~1.0" ID) is about $1.00 an inch.

Do you have any custom race car / drag / dune buggy shops around? Most of them use DOM by the tons in making chassis and roll bars. They are usually happy to sell the short remnants.

Larry

Not trying to nitpick but DOM and Seamless are not the same thing, close but not the same.

The actual sizing nomenclature in my area is; OD x wall decimal x ID example 1 1/2" OD x .250" wall x 1.000" ID. The reason for this is that DOM tubing size limits are controlled by the OD and ID - not the wall thickness.
For this size tubing the actual limits are +.005/ -.000 on the OD and +.000/-.005 on the ID in other words the OD varies to the Plus only and the ID varies to the minus only. The unilateral variance is true until you get to 5 1/2" OD and then it is a bilateral variance- it varies in both direction, on the OD an ID.

This is a good source for small quantities of DOM tubing ( as well as other materials) Order Mild Steel A513 Tube in Small Quantities at OnlineMetals.com
