You sure have peaked my intrest! Does this method go down as deep as the holes you drill or much further? Does it get alot of the roots as well? I have about 20 stumps that probably average 10" or so. I dread renting a stump grinder, those things beat the heck out of you! Last time I rented one and ran it most of the day, I was sore for 2 days after. Can you do this on fresh stumps? and how long after you treat them can you light them. Is this dangerous to me, or possibly my natural gas line. How far would a stump need to be away from the gas line to be safe? Sorry for all of the questions, but this sounds pretty cool! One more question, does it make alot of smoke ( I am trying to figure out if I would need to get a burn permit).
Thanks a bunch for the cool idea!
Dave
It burns down as deep as the saltpeter has penetrated the wood. I was always taught to wait for a rain. The stump will dissolve without the fire, but it takes several years.

Thanks Slamfire, I'll have to give it a try!

When using explosives you want to dig out underneath, mix fuel oil and amonium nitrate in a bucket, pour it in the hole, add a couple sticks of dynamite and blast them right out. I like to use enough to really rip them and blow the hole into a clean crater. I have blasted pieces 300 ft, ha. You can directinal blow depending on charge placement and size, smaller blast they want to go sideways, the bigger the straighter up. They blast better in solid ground, poorly in soft sponge or sand. As for trench, drill hole every 18 inches and drop in sticks. They are close enough together one sets the next off.

I do not think this would work for me, the neighbors are to close and would not like the precussion. It would be cool thou!

Where in the heck to you get dynamite? I thought Home Land Security put an end to that unless you are a licensed explosive tech. Maybe I need to take a closer look at Home Depot next time I am there.

Just call your local FBI office and tell them you are in the market for a case or two.;)

I have heard that the license to get explosives with (From the BATF very similar to a FFL but easyer) is quite inexpensive. Do not know where you can get the materials though, never driven by an "explosives depot" sign on the road :D . The other question is the training needed, you are not talking our corner fireworks store here in SC! You can really mess yourself up if you do not know what you are doing. Sounds interesting and I got several hundred stumps now after the logging operation but I don't think it would work for me.

To purchase/distribute/handle, you'll need a Federal explosives license/permit. Not too costly, but you'll need about 6 months for the full FBI background check, assuming you can pass that. Then, you'll generally need a handler's card and a blaster's card issued by your state fire marshall. In TN, one year of apprenticeship and passing the test is required for the blaster card. If you plan to keep any on-hand, the BATFE will come and inspect your storage magazine to be sure it is up to code. Once you have all of that, Austin Powder Co and Orica are the usual suppliers.

Unlike those who love to slam "big government", I am delighted to hear that you cannot go to your local tractor supply company and walk out with a case of dynamite. A one year apprenticeship and a detailed FBI check sound just about right to screen out the yahoos.
