Figured I’d write this since I found very little online regarding Hawke Trailers.

I recently purchased a 6x12 10k Hawke dump trailer, it is a 2022 but used from a 3rd party. It was about 2 hours from my home and I had a few questions before I went and picked it up, so I called Hawke customer service directly.

I wanted to know the following:
  • What size are the lug nuts and what is the torque value (to check before the trip back)
  • What is the max normal operational current draw (want to install a battery disconnect)
  • Does the charge circuit provide any type of over-current protection (prevent truck fuse blowing while using the hydraulics)

When I asked about the lug nuts, I was told they purchased their axles from Dexter. I asked again emphasizing I was looking for the size of the lug nuts and what torque they set them at during assembly. Again, I was told they get their axles from Dexter.

When I asked about the max current draw, I was told 9, just the number 9. I laughed at that one and told her no. She put me on hold to check with the plant manager. 10 minutes later she comes back and tells me it’s 12 volts.

When I asked about the charge circuit, she couldn’t even understand the question. I asked her to write my questions down, get the answers and call me back.

About an hour later I get a call with questions answered from “The Plant Manager”

  • Lug nuts are 13/16 @ 125 ft⋅lb (Dexter manual value is 100-120 ft⋅lb, and when I checked them, they were not even close)
  • Max normal operational current draw (They read me the CCA and CA spec from the battery)
  • Over-current Protection - Crickets

Still looking for 2 of 3 answers I submitted the last 2 questions via their online Contact Us page. It has been 9 days, and I still have not heard back.

Long story short, in my brief experience, Hawke Trailers Customer Service Sucks. It’s worse than non-existent, if they didn’t answer the phone, I’d be left to wonder, but they answered and seem completely clueless about their product, from the person answering the phone up to what I was told was “The Plant Manager” - Clueless.

On the physical side, the trailer seems fine, though I haven’t had it long enough to form a real educated opinion yet, but so far 2 things bug me.

The top rail of the dump body bends over and into the stake pockets and extends about an inch down, so things should fit into the stake holes, don’t! They fit in the bottom, but not out the top where the top rail bends into.

The paint application quality (paint not powder-coat) : There are places they just didn’t spray, an example being inside the stake pockets, they didn’t even try, and it’s all of them, even the portion of the dump body is left unpainted, not just the additional steel of the stake pocket. Can easily be reached with a rattle can, but not something I should have to do.

On a positive note, it pulls very nice, much smoother (less bounce) than my 18’ 14k Diamond C tilt bed.

It's been over a month, I never heard back from Hawke.
I also contacted Bucher Hydraulics via their online contact form. They are the manufacturer of the hydraulic system on the trailer, and I was looking for any documentation they may have. I provided pictures, model and serial numbers. I never heard back from them either.

I've used the trailer for 4 loads at this point, and can now answer the questions from above.
No load current draw was ~125a and lifting ~7000 pounds was ~225a
Yes, there actually is overcurrent protection on the charge circuit, there is a 30a breaker on the charge wire, it is not located in the main box, but under the dump bed. Check out the size of the ring lugs they used.

The bar that secures the ramps in place is attached in 3 places, with 2 welds in each point. 2 of those places (4 welds) completely broke and the bar was dangling, and I haven't even used the ramps! Whatever you dump out, does hit that bar, and then the bar sits in whatever was dumped out until you move the trailer. Seems like a common design, but others don't seem to break. I noticed it after the 3rd load. First was fill dirt, second was slag, 3rd was fill dirt. A friend has since re-welded the bar for me.

Still tows nice and lifts to capacity, but the little things (attention to detail) and the lack of knowledge and support from the main company is perplexing.

ahhh......well....That is bad. I trust that wire, maybe 12 gauge, is to a relay. The weld looks like it was TACKED, and they never came back to complete the welding process. Either that, or they need to hire a welder.

I may look over the other welds that are in critical spots.....I guess there may be something to say about robotic welding. They don't usually miss spots

Many - many years ago, I worked at Sheffield Steel in Kansas City - Later it was Armco Steel. I worked in the Joist plant and the Furnace Plant. But even though the welds were machine welded, every line ended with two or three "pickup welders." That was what I did mostly and our job was to verify the welds and repair any that were incomplete or improper. Hard to say what happened on the trailer, but I bet the company could look at and tell you what happened.

They should want to know - before it happens on EVERY trailer they sell.

I am not familiar with Hawke Trailers (now glad about that). But if I buy a premium trailer with a lot of features, I ask questions. If I decide to save money and buy a Cheaper than most trailer, I don't ask many questions because I know I won't like the answers. My first question is usually, - does the company use certified full time welders.

No, the wire went directly from the 7way plug through the circuit breaker to the battery, nowhere else.
I did however install a relay myself to break that connection when the hydraulic motor is in use.
