My cutter came minus the manual...it has a large plug on the side of the gear box about an 1'' or so from the top of the box, and a smaller plug down low..I'm assuming the drain plug.
Do I just fill it with the 90w to the point that it is seeping out of the of the large plug on top?

I know its a "duh" question, but please bare with me..

Thanks.

If it is a new cutter it should have the right amount of oil in it but it wouldn't hurt to check. The large hole at the top is the fill hole. Take the plug out of the bottom hole, if oil runs out you have enough, if not add oil through the top hole until it comes out the bottom hole.

If you take the bottom plug out, all the oil will come out! Take the top plug out and see if the level is even with the bottom of the hole. If you can't tell, take a piece of wire, bend it into a makeshift dipstick, and see where the level is. Some gearboxes spec 90W, some spec 130W...

Swamp,

About all new cutters will be shipped and delivered with a dry gear box. Unless you negotiate the dealer to do it.

Use gear oil. Either 80w90 or 90w140. Depends on temperatures and use conditions. There will usually be a hole on the side of the gear box that is the fill to level. About 2/3 full is a good rule of thumb if you have no idea.

WHile no lube is real bad, too much can be sort of bad too. I have sprung for the more expensive synthetic lube in mine. They do run hot and that helps them run cooler.

I called Hawkline direct, and the nice young lady told me to hold on and she would check. She came back and said "yep we are pretty sure that you fill it just to the large plug, and no more."

I started laughing after the "pretty sure" part..

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Hey Swampvol,
I also have the Hawkline cutter. The top hole is the fill hole. Just fill it till it runs out. I also contacted Hawkline and inquired about the fill plug being vented because I have seen that on a lot of gear boxes. They said it did not require a vented plug. All and all, a pretty decent cutter for the price. I have used it for about a year reclaiming some fields and it has held up pretty well. The only issue I have had is I twisted the steel where the pins for the hitch are mounted. That may have come from backing it into some trees, I am not sure. I did double the mounts up with another piece of steel the same thickness.

Emmy, funny you mentioned that. I loaned the cutter out to a "friend" last summer and he dropped it back off when I wasn't home. Guess what?!?!? The 3-point on the cutter was twisted to ******. To this day he swears he has no clue as to what could of happened . Maybe he doesn't.

Still my friend, but I think he knows not to ask to borrow it again.

It sounds like the middle part is correct!

Not to dis your friend, but some people think that all ag equipment is made of 6" solid steel plate and treat it accordingly. The have no idea stuff can, and does, break.

I was going through some old posts looking for something and came across this one on the Hawkline rotary cutters. You stated you did not have a manual for it and I remembered I did have one. I am attaching it here. Hope it comes in handy.
