Hay Ride Dangers

Well, since we're off topic as far as safety...

My first hayride was carrying a bunch (½ or so) of family teenagers and my girl friend in the back of a '58 Chevy 1 ton stake body truck. We had a ball! This had to be 1968 or 1969.
My last one was just before I bought my 670 (first tractor). That was a hay wagon being towed by a big Ag Deere during a Halloween fund raiser for a local volunteer fire department. That was a lot of fun! That's also what started me down the path to tractor ownership.

Its illegal in our area now to give hayrides, a wagon was read ended by a pickup and killed a half dozen kids so the gov jumped on it to make it illegal.

You can still do it on private property and you can transport farm workers to and from the fields on a wagon.

The toughest thing I find with new hay crew members is keeping them away from the tongue and the front of the wagon. It is slow but it still can't stop. We used to have front racks on all the wagons that helped but none of those now.

That is so typical of our gov't.. 'ban' the activities of the innocent victoms.. not the ones of the criminals.

Every time there is a shooting.. people clamor to ban guns.. ( I say we just execute all the criminals??? )... and then not worry about it..

FMJ sounds like we were on some of the same hayrides.

Hay rides and beer kegs will cause accidents that take a while to show up.

While I have no experience of Hay Rides last week when we were bringing in the hay we had wagons full of hay and the people who were picking the hay up sitting on top of the hay. They could have touched the phone wires overhead if they wanted to

On the steeper fields there was no way of stopping the load on the way down so you just went down in a very low gear and chucked the hay on while moving.

I suppose it is just how sensible people are
