Hay Spears

widen them and go under the sides of the bales ... sorta craddle the bale.

It only works if you don't want to stack them. For single layer it works fine. Awkward to place the bale into the feeder compared to a proper spear though.

Wondering how you calculate it as costing less? You mean they eat less or waste less, 'cause out west round bails are less expensive than small square bails.

One of the main justifications to get an AG tractor was to swap to large bails rather than use small square bails. Got tired of loading/unloading/stacking/unstacking/feeding 12 tons a year by myself. Lots rather use hydraulics to move the tonnage. On the downside, I figure my equine will eat more now and get fat.

Less waste and not having to buy both types. My hay cost is now $1300 a year. It takes us 100 square bales per horse per year at $6.50/bale. They get a flake twice a day. They also have pasture except when it is wet or real cold. Before we were buying 12 rounds per horse per year at $60/roll. I changed them out every month. I still had to buy 100 squares a year for cold or wet weather when they were up in the stalls.

I have pallet forks, but didn't think they would work. Do they slide into the hay just like the spear does?

I tried spearing with mine and it didn't work. You have to cradle them and I didn't like it, they are not secure. Turn too sharp or get on a slope and it falls off. If you raise it too high and don't lower the forks it can fall back down the FEL and on top of you. Much less chance of that with spears.

Here is an old CDC report.

I prefer this style for the 5x6 rounds that we use. 20 years ago I bought it used for $75. :D

Also used it back when I had the V518.

Thank you. Sounds like the pallet forks are not what I'm wanting for this.

I have used my pallet forks before(when had one or two to load, didnt wont to change to spear) just set them as wide apart as they go and stick just the one side into the middle towards top some of the bale. I rarely use my pallet forks now that I have a double hay spear it gets used for both duties, even unload ton of feed on pallets with it.
I have two single spears like in pic above and the double long spears get used for a lot more than just hay handling.
