Around here, we never see tarped horse hay. It would mold up pretty quick and become cheap cow hay.

My neighbor did this for her square bale storage. She bought lumber and built sides and ends on them as well. They actually look really good and I bet she only spent several hundred in lumber. She got 1 then a few laters got another 1.


That was my plan as well to spread the costs over time. Put up the carport. Add tarps to three sides that get most of the wind. Add sheathing and doors when I had more money. The carports were essentially instant buildings and an added benefit in my area was I did not require a building permit or inspections.

I have had decent luck with the white hay tarps from tractor supply. However I store my hay on pallets and set bales on top to create a tent (tarp has minimal contact with main hay stack) This gives air flow under and around the main stack, Now that I have my hay barn I still use the pallets on the floor. Working well.
