hazmat\'s got a camera.... Any tips?

Finally bit the bullet & bought a camera. Got a Sony cybershot DSC-P7 at the local sony outlet. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here's a shot of my overstuffed garage. The cutter is going to Maine this weekend.

How do y'all stay under the 100K limit? Shoot it low res on the camera, or dumb it down on the computer? The attached pic was shot at lowest res on camera 640X480, the next jump up 1280X960 yields a 300K image.

Looking forward to adding to the nice collection of "tractor ****" /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Have fun with the toy. Shoot lots of pictures and dump the bad ones, can't beat digital!

I modify my pictures with Photoshop 7. I make a copy of the file and modify the copy. If I'm only reducing the size I dump the copy after I upload them. Saves space. I usually put my files on zip disks for storage. The zip is big, fast and portable.

Thanks Mike, By the way, nice property you've got in the catskills! I've got a CD burner in the new computer, probably use that to back up the pics.

Congrats on the camera. I love Sony products. I have an Olympus C3020 3.2 mp. I have had it since my baby girl was born last april and have had alot of fun sending pics to the family of her growing up. When I know I will be sending a pic for email or posting purposes I use the lowest setting and still get great results. Usually the pic is about 75k. On the highest setting it is great for printing perfect 8x10 prints. File is almost 1meg. Have fun experimenting. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hazmat.

I also put in a second hard drive 80GB just for photos. They're not that expensive anymore.

Thanks for the compliment, we really enjoy the area of the Catskill's we're in. Still a lot of open farms where we are. I really like watching my neighbor work his farm, he has 800 acres, my compact tractor is dwarfed by his AG's, and he has four of them $ /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif$.

I prefer to shoot high res all the time, and dumb it down for the computer in a photo editing software. That way, if I take "prize winning" photos, I'll always have them at a decent resolution for printing later. With the price of digital memory pretty cheap, get the most you can afford for the camera. Then get a CD burner for your PC. What I usually do is shoot pictures, then COPY it to the PC so that it is in two places(for a backup). When the digital memory starts getting full, I burn a CD of the pictures on the PC and then TEST THE CD before deleting it from the digital memory. That way I always have it in at least two places. Storing it on the hard drive only is not safe. If the disk dies, you have lost everything /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. I also make a second CD and keep it inthe safe deposit box at the bank. In two years I have only filled three CDs. That's about 2 thousand pictures. The camera paid for itself in the first year just in film and processing savings.

Great picture, by the way. Very clear. Congrats on the camera. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: hazmat\'s got a camera.... Any tips?

I am the same way. I shoot everything in the highest resolution and then adjust the pictures to post. But I keep the originals. Here is a pic I took yesterday. This pic start out at 1.76 MB. Just by cropping it I got it down to 85kb

Whisky,

The previous owner of the house hung the curtains.

Robert,

Excellant pic!

Everybody else, I've only got 16 MB memory stick right now, so it fills up fast on hi res if I can't dump it to the computer. Once I get more memory, I like your suggestions to shoot in high res & then dumb it down on the computer.
