Head gasket

The gasket is not symmetrical. You will notice 2 holes on one side of the gasket that is not on the other side. The holes go to the rear of the engine. See here. . That should tell you which way it needs to go. The gasket is the correct gasket for the 1700 and is the same one everyone else here is selling.

From the things that you told us on the phone I would strongly suggest that you have your head checked and check the threads on your block. There should be no reason why 2 new head gaskets would be leaking from the exact same place.

Aaron,
I'm just curious for my own benifit... Is there a difference front to back? If he lined the lifter holes up could it still be upside down.. I know on some engines there are specific coolant passages that are blocked on one end but open on the other.. Again, just curious as I may need to do this at some point on my 2000.. Thanks..

No, If the holes are lined up it can't be on upside down. There are open holes on one end that are not there on the other.

One needs to be aware of what they are doing when installing a head gasket. I have installed probably a dozen in my lifetime, ranging from single cylinder engines to V8 auto engines and I believe all of them would physically fit upside down or backwards. As a kid I heard horror stories about engines overheating or seizing from head gaskets put on wrong, and was always made aware of aligning all of the holes.

The gasket in the picture that you emailed me can be installed either way. It has the holes at both ends of the gasket even though the block & head do not. The gasket that we sent, however, can only be installed 1 way as it only has holes where they are needed.

I suspect that it was either installed backwards and the ports on the block and head were covered but not sealed - causing the leak - or that there is another problem somewhere else.

That is what i needed to know. He said the head gaskets were the same .So if yours don't have holes on both end then that tell me he put it upside down. I was not trying to say you send the wrong one. I new it was the right one . I just need to know how to put it on right .I can not keep buying head gasket for him to mess them up.
