Drew when you are looking for a truck to pull a 5th wheel RV, try to stick to a long bed model. A short bed , a truck with four doors or an extended cab, will not let you make sharp turns while backing or pulling forward without damaging your truck and trailer. You can get by this with a sliding 5th wheel hitch, but they are pricier. I have seen a lot of trucks with the back window broke out, body damage and damage to their RV so don't take this lightly.

Is long bed the criteria? Is a Crew Cab, 4 door, with an 8' bed ok?

everything I have read tells me long bed for big fifth wheels, though slider hitches seem to make it ok for smaller beds.
Crew cab, mega cab, whatever they call it, I dont need the back seat anyway except for a few times a year. Apparently the longer the wheelbase the better, but
that clearly will make the truck clumsier in tight quarters. Just a trade off we've been talking about.

You will be fine with that configuration. The short beds are where you get in trouble if you don't have a sliding hitch.

I think they have one, maybe two, many zeros in that price. The $200 a night hotel is sounding better all the time.

Back in the late 80's, my parents bought a used RV to drive up to Alaska. Daddy wanted to go Salmon fishing up there. They got a good price on the RV. It had been driven to Tampa and back, and the folks decided on a bigger one. It had about a thousand miles on it and cost about $40K {in 1988 dollars} They hired my cousin and his wife to go with them to help with the driving and I stayed home to look after the farm. By the time they got to Washington state they had had about all the togetherness they could stand. They went out on a charter boat and caught 3 salmon, then started back home. I figured with what they paid the cousins, the gas used, the cost of campgrounds and the money spent on the RV, those fish cost about $15K each. They could have flown to Alaska and stayed in a plush fish camp for a month and come out cheaper. But we still have the RV, even if it never gets cranked.

I've heard similar stories of too much togetherness can be a problem...

Seems the best at it are Husband and Wife that plan and enjoy each other's company.

On one of my trips there were some disagreements on eating in or eating out.

From my perspective you just can't beat something like a Denny's Grand Slam special.

On this one trip, my cousin insisted on getting everything from the market... that include buying spices, seasoning, foil, etc...

He didn't like it when I said we could eat breakfast for a week on what he just spent.

it's been five years, but I'm trying it again...
In the interim, owned a Jayco travel trailer, but continuing arthritis nixed all that hooking and unhooking.
So now I'm trying it in a 25' B+/C small diesel motorhome with no towed vehicle.
So if you want to follow along again, here I go.
Slightly different route, obviously I'm starting out in NC instead of PA this time, and this time will make it to the Pacific.

I am a big fan of all Mercedes vehicles.

I am intrigued by the small diesel.

Looking forward to your comments and pictures.
