Anyone know of some ruggedized noise cancelling headphones, suitable for tractor use? I swore I have seen landscapers wearing Stihl branded ones, but I couldn't fine anything online. Thanks

I use both sponge inserts and some shooting muffs at the same time ( Brand name??). Gives me about 30 db reduction combined. Hearing loss is forever!! I have already lost hearing and refuse to lose anymore if I can help it.

Here's a link I posted on some 'music ears'. These arent ruggedized, but I've been wearing them when I'm on the tractor, lawn tractor mowing, weedeating, etc, they work very well for me.

Pro Ears Dimension 2. Pricey but how much is your hearing worth? They also allow you to connect a radio or other source of music.

An iPod Shuffle doesn't cancel any noise and when used on a tractor, you have to have the volume up so high you will cause hearing damage.

Peltor also makes Work Tunes but they are not noise canceling.

MikePA,
Exactly, I have my ipod but when running the tractor especially when mowing I knew I'd have the volume cranked plus the noise of the tractor, thats why I was looking for noice cancelling, I'll check your recommendation out.

I have two options I use so I can listen to my MP3 player (mostly podcasts) while using the tractor. The first is to take a cheap pair of headphones and remove the speakers from the headset and mount them under the foam in some inexpensive hearing protector ear muffs. The other more expensive option I use is a pair of Shure E2c sound isolating headphones , they are an earplug with a speaker- these work great and have great sound and I don't have to turn them up very loud. The disadvantage is when I'm off the tractor I can't hear anything but the music, and it's a bit disturbing. I've used a pair of noise canceling headphones and they didn't work well at all- had to turn up the iPod full blast. Headphones

If you want to listen to something in the headphones try

Extreme Headphones

I got them so I could listen to audio books or talk radio while I'm on my riding lawnmower, which I think is much louder than my NH TC30 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and they work great.
I can clearly hear the spoken text at half volume or less on my MP3 player.
With anything I had tried before (including active noise canceling headphones) I had to have the volume up all the way. They claim to cancel out 28db of surrounding sound.

They aren't necessarily ruggedized, they were designed for drummers in home recording studios, but they are very well made and have held up well for me.

I think I paid $89 for mine.

I really enjoy my Shure Ec3 earphones. The sound quality is great and they fit within the ear canal to block ambient sound. A little expensive, but they do block noise.

My sons gave me a set of Peltor Race Tunes. The only thing I can compare them to is some old shooting muffs and an am/fm muff set from wally world or radio shack. The Peltor set claims a noise reduction rating of 22 decibels. (per the box) They do block out a lot more noise than the other stuff I was using. Don't have a clue what they cost but I like 'em.

My dozer is the loudest thing I have and it's extremly loud. I wear ear plugs AND head phones and after a day on it, my head is still raddled for an hour or so afterwards.

I found that a really good pair of music headphones really make a difference. Mine are Sennheiser and I bought them because of the reviews I read and thier price. They cover the full ear and are very comfortable.

I plug them into a radio and can listen to AM talk or FM music very clearly at a minimum level without having any problems from the noise of the dozer.

After a day wearing them on the dozer, I'm fine. No problems at all!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

For me, they are better than ear plugs and headphones combined.

I do not have noise cancelling Ear Protectors but I do use AO Saftey Work Tunes from Home Depot. They ran $50 and have held up to about 200 hrs so far. Noise reduction is 22 dbA and radio volume is limited to 82 dbA. I never get even close to turning them up that loud.

They are comfortable and the radio breaks-up the monotony of mowing and such. I don't use the radio when concentration or communication is required.
