Bird, were you ever in the military and received an honorable discharge? If so, it would behoove you (and others reading this, if the above is applicable) to go see the Veteran's Services Officer in your county.
If you have a service connection for hearing loss, or can provide supporting information in regards to your loss now, being caused or aggravated by your military service, you can get the VA to pay for them. From what I hear (no pun intended), the VA provides some really nice aids. I was told they are 5-8k a pair. Don't hold me to that figure, it's just what I was told.
My best friend/lifelong pal/fishing/hunting buddy is a VSO. We applied for service connection on my behalf and got it. I have 40% loss in my left ear with a moderate dose of the butterfly ear (tinnitus). Mine sounds like a butterfly flapping it's wings beside my ear. The ringing has really cut down since I throttled back on taking anything with aspirin.
Anyhow, my .02 worth.
