It's finally been done here. The hottest day ever recorded in the 43 years I've lived here.

106F The only good thing - 5% relative humidity. Trying to fight a wildfire in this heat - unbelievable.

I don't know how the crews manage either; clothes, nomex, outer gear, and actively working hard, or hiking hard. We've watched our local crew practice running 1.5" lines up 45-60 degree (not %) slopes. They are really, really fast.

I'm thankful for every single person who volunteers, or has a job, as a firefighter.

All the best,

Peter

One of my all time fav movies.

Yup. 106 degrees right now with 6% humidity according to the National Weather Service at the town nearest to me. That kind of heat and low humidity combined with wind will dehydrate - mummify - a body in no time at all.

Official high temperature was 108 degrees...despite all the smoke in the air from the California fires.

It's supposed to get close to 90 with humidity getting down to around 50 this afternoon. It's been a few days since the humidity has been that low. The bugs love it. I saw about 50 bats flying over the treetops yesterday right before dawn. I've got 240 bales of hay on my trailer in the barn that needs to be stacked. I'll wait until next week when high temps are supposed to be in the 70's.

Around here it’s not uncommon to get a heat index over 100 but the air temp is 90. Dew points will be over 70 when this happens.

I've been fortunate. Lived my entire life in northern states. Twenty two years in Alaska - the remainder, here, in WA.

However - I did get a taste of the "other side". 1972 - spent a week in July in Houston. It wasn't so much the high temps as the high humidity.

Going from Anchorage to Houston was a real shock. Landed at the new international airport in Houston. The air conditioning at the airport was malfunctioning. At least, it wasn't only me that was suffering.

Interesting to see the heat index lower than the real temperature.
Here in the very humid north east, summer heat index’s are always higher than the actual temperature, never lower.

Dew point lately has been hovering around 72f, with dead still air. Gross.

It's 8:45 am here in south Louisiana and the temperature is 83 degrees. Not to bad you say???
The dew point is 80.2 degrees which puts the heat index at 96.8 degrees.
By midafternoon we will probably see a heat index of around 115 degrees
