Not to be a wet towel here but I'd be cautious about casually using
heating oil in place of diesel. I do yearly maintenance on my oil
burner which involves tossing the filter and strainer/nozzle.
To eyewitness either of these will make you think twice about using
heating oil in your machine.
I suspect the distribution process for heating oil to be much less
concerned about contamination as maintenance items go into the trash
can. And worse case is you will have to replace a $3 nozzle or under
$1 filter.
If you are using heating oil as diesel fuel by all means put a quality
filter somewhere between it and your tractor as well as use a water
absorbing fuel additive.

This past fall, when I got my delivery of home heating oil, the drivers next stop was a farm diesel fuel delivery. More problems are created with improper storage on the end users end than on the delivery end. If you have a tank that is vented to the atmosphere and don't keep it full, condensation will form on the inside in the hot muggy days of summer. This isn't a problem for the oil dealers because they turn over enough product and they also test their tanks for water on a regular basis. Do you know when the last time your home heating oil was tested for water? I check mine on a regular basis and remove any water before it becomes a problem for me. In twenty years, that was only one time and it was a result of not keeping the tank full during the summer months.

Yes I do -- never. Not that this is the best approach. I assume I'll
have condensation contamination and use a fuel conditioner to absorb
the moisture.
I have 2x275 gal tanks inside and 2x275 gal tanks outside. Filling them
up in August typically gets the lowest seasonal oil price and usually
lasts a full year for heat/hot water. This stuff simply needs to burn
efficiently and not unduly clog the filters nor nozzle screen.
If I had substantial use of diesel I would be motivated to have a means
of safely using fuel oil to satisfy that need. As a balance I think
buying/storing off-road diesel is a reasonable compromise.
