Heating oil tank for storing diesel

I use heating oil in my tractor with no problems. I store it in a 50 gal drum in my barn. Very cold winter and no starting problems.

Here, both fuels come out of the same tank on the truck, they are just taxed differently. I have a couple of heating oil tanks and was just wondering if I should use them in place of my round tanks as they don't stick out from the building as far where I have them.

My question is about certification. This gets crazier all the time. They may be out of date or one may be told that they are not certified for THAT application.

I like to have lots of dyed and road Diesel on hand for those doomsday scnereros, but it bugs me that I pay more for bulk Diesel delivered then what you pay at the pump!

Comment to Industrial toys from another Ontario resident.
Fuel suppliers have a big legal obligation to only fill containers which meet current regs.
I live on a farm and need fuel for my tractor.
First, I had to replace my 250 gal round tank with a new one with a special brass label on it.
Next, a few years later they suddenly would not put fuel in the new tank I had located in my open sided shed because of new distance requirements from buildings.
I found it nice to be able to fuel up out of the elements.
Property insurers are very interested in if and how you store fuel as the costs to clean up spills are incredible.
fyi my recent load of -40 colored diesel in Dec 2014 was .91 per litre + gst for a total of $1.02
I dont think it is worth taking a chance on storing fuel in a way that is not totally legal. Think of how you would feel if you had a spill and suddenly your neighbors well was contaminated.

If you can get the tank under shelter, away from the elements, I think you will be just fine with it. Make sure that you have drain valve to drain water off if needed. I would store it with a small slope longitudinally away from the tank outlet; to allow water to drain in one place where the drain is. I would also add a fuel filter on the tank outlet to trap water/dirt etc.
Have attached a photo of my setup for you. The diesel in my tank is probably 14 years old and it is just fine - it is the supply for my back up generator. I run the generator every couple of months and have had no problems to date in the ten years I have owned this property.

My tanks are next to my driveshed, and so far they have said nothing. A few years ago, they insisted that my tanks be on reinforced concrete. Patio style stones were OK. Once I had a piece of pressure treated lumber under one set of legs to get the diesel in an almost empty tank down to one side. The driver didn't like that and removed it!

I can understand the merits of a double wall tank but can't for the life of me understand the concrete containment system on some tanks. What is one to do with the contaminated water?

I am probably coming really close to getting a truck mounted fuel tank, fill up at best prices and store the **** stuff any way I see fit, using common sense of course! That would even give me 30 days to pay on my credit card and I get points! And no, I don't have any insurance because we told those guys to go screw themselves a very long time ago! lol

I liked Doxford Jim's tank and gauge- and I noted the valve on the tubing. Treat the fuel, keep the tank full, and install a decent fuel filter/water separator, and you will be fine, even for long term.

I drive a oil truck , the only difference is the dye thats added , red means off road or heating oil. I use heating oil tanks for fuel . I have a oil water seperator and filter , I pull from the top , never had a problem.

If your tractor has a diesel particulate filter, don't use heating oil if it's high sulphur fuel. Could damage your filter. The filters are engineered for <15 ppm sulphur fuel.
