I do believe I will have it dug up and go with an above ground tank. Of course..

I would suggest having the new above ground tank installed soon, before your policy lapses, and getting the oil in the old tank pumped into the new one.

If oils shows up anywhere in your neighboorhood, there is a chance they could erroneously trace it back to your tank. The only real defense is not having a tank...

I did find two companies that offer oil tank insurance around these parts. One has limited coverage (25k) and a very high deductible (5k). The other offers 100k coverage and 1k deductible and since I'm getting tested today anyway.. if she passes she qualifies. 200 dollar a year premium. But I'll still look into converting. I'd probably go electric.. and just crank up the woodstove when the skies turn grey. I figure electric rates can only go so high. Oil there seems to be no limit.. same with LP.

Don't know about New York, but here in Ct, the oil part of an electric bill more times than not, is the highest part of the bill...

The tank may deteriorate from the inside. Water, sulphur compounds and bacteria will do the damage.

Install the double tank type above ground and shelter it from the elements.

The tank tester just left.. 375 dollars later and a clean bill of health. He did a vacuum, sound, and soil test and all three came up clean. He says that no one was concerned about in ground heating oil tanks until about 2000 then the environmental people got hot and heavy on it.

He says the new "in ground" rules are prohibitive, double wall tanks.. containment structures.. cost a fortune.. so everyone building now goes above ground or finds another way to heat their homes.

Least wise I'll be able to get insurance.. probably keep it in the ground till I can afford the 3 grand to yank it and replace it with something inside.. or a whole new heating system.
