Heavy Duty Flail Mulchers

Very nice, I have been eyeing the Peruzzo's and Ventura's on Iowa Farm Equipment's site for years. The Bull series is what i would want, rated 4" to 5" material. The 47" or 55" would complement the huge Rhino I have well, and I could probably run it behind either of my tractors. Are you glad you went as large as you did, and are you happy with the hydraulic side shift?
I'm happy with the mower. I love the side shift. My only problem is a plastic bushing 9n the slide shift mechanism keeps breaking & disappearing. Have some spares & haven't replaced it this time. It's still working fine & not noticing any extra wear on the slide rails.

Mine is the 2200 I think. 8' or so. Huge for my L4060, but has been sitting me fine.

The 300 is 10' wide with a 9' cutting width. I think it's rated for at least 2" and probably much more. If you read my post then you know the story of how I found it. Man I'm tickled to death with it. I've been installing the slide cylinder this morning. As you read I bought it minus that. It's been a challenge with SAE holes in the cylinder and metric holes in the flail but I have it figured out now. BTW, they make several different sizes smaller than mine. Mine is the largest. It weighs 2100 pounds plus.

Here are a couple of pics. The second one is the slide cylinder I'm installing.

I'm looking to see if anyone has experience with flail mowers that are set up to mulch heavy material, they go by orchard flails to some. I got a great deal on an 8' Rhino orchard flail with huge hammers, and it mulches branches and sticks up to about 3" diameter with ease. It also cuts grass and weeds extremely well. It's a beast of a mower though, it's a lot for my 60hp Kubota. I'm looking for a smaller mulching flail, ideally it could be run behind either of my tractors, 30HP Mahindra (cat1) and 60HP Kubota (cat2). I know I'm limited buy the 30HP tractors low PTO HP, but my experience tells me as long as I can get it up to PTO speed the inertia of the heavy rotor and flails will keep it moving in all but the heaviest of material.

The only affordable option I have found is from Betstco, what they call a D series trailer cutter: FH-D Super Heavy Duty Trail Cutter/Flail Mower | Betstco Sales, Parts, and Service:. They have a few widths, dual cat 1/2, have rakers to keep material inside the mower to be mulched finer, and are rated to mulch 5" material! I see a lot of offerings from the Italian flail mowers, and it seems $8k is the starting price, and it goes way up from there. I have about 30 dead ash trees to drop, and I fight a never ending battle with broken tree limbs all over my property after storms. My experience with the Rhino is I'd much rather mulch the branches in place, than play pick up sticks for hours.

Anyone on here using a mulching flail mower?
I purchased the the Bestco 48" HD mulching Flail Mower back in May and the thing is a beast. I've been using it to clear all the fire hazard brush on the perimeter and it makes quick work of 2" and less material and pumps out a beautiful carpet of mulch in it's path.

If you happen across a smaller one at the price you paid let me know! I can't justify buying a new one unfortunately.

Is it the Heavy Duty D series trail cutter rated to cut 5" material, with the rakes built in? Or, is the Heavy Duty series rated to cut 3" material, with no rakes? Also, how many PTO horsepower is the tractor you're running it on?

Not rated for 5" material for sure but 3" and less goes thru it nicely. No rakes and my PTO is rated at 23 HP at the shaft. Looks like the prices just went up over $100.

A question. You get a HD flail mower that is rated to cut 5" material. How are you going to get at that 5" material?? Is your tractor designed to drive over and flatten this stuff? My understanding of flail mowers - they do not cut well in reverse.

Am I missing something - ?

I run over downed branches if I feel they will not get caught on the underside of the tractor. If I think they might get hung up, I raise the flail slightly and back over the branch. Once the hammers get a hold of the material, they don't care which direction you are moving. I believe most peoples on flails are concerning more delicate models with grass knives. These orchard flails are a whole different animal, having now owned both types.
