The fact that there was 4" of free play indicates the throwout bearing has worn through the pressure plate fingers and is not releasing the clutch . I would say the throwout bearing has seized and burnt it's way through the fingers and is only JUST working occasionally .

might not have had enough free play and ground them down too.

Yes that could also happen . It just sounds strange to me that there was so much travel and the fact that it was under cover and also drove up on the trailer without trouble . And all of a sudden , the clutch wont release . Ive never heard of a plate sticking that fast without it getting wet .

that's what makes me think it is oily. if it is.. it can stick in minutes.. and them pop free just as fast.. might be alot of oil in that bellhousing...

If oil residue is suspected, taking the starter out and inspecting will tell the tale pretty quick.

There is a adjustment plate on right side of bell housing so you can adjust the 2 stage clutch you should be able to see if there is movement there, also check the cotter pin at the bottom of bell housing spin it around to clear the hole and see if any fluid comes out.
