Hi everyone!
I grew up on a small farm and have been around tractors and machinery all my life. My wife and I moved around a little, but finally made our way back home and recently bought a home that needed a lot of work. We have got the house almost up to our standards over the winter, and now I am turning my attention to the outside. We have 15 acres of land; the 5 acres where the house sits is mostly level and open, the rest is on a hill that varies in steepness from 5% to 50%. The house was vacant for nearly 2 years and the whole property was neglected for probably 10 years before that, so I have my work cut out for me. My heavy-duty weed wacker, a tri-axle load of loam and a couple drums of grass seed should take care of the flat fields. I'll add some shrubs around the house and should be good to go.
The hill is the big problem. On the very steep portions, we are going to terrace it and make vegetable and flower gardens, but for the rest of it, we are planning on reclaiming it. Before the snow flew, I put the bush hog on the back of my fathers JD 3520 and was able to mow a path about 10 feet wide up the southern side (shallowest part) of the slope. I tried to do more, but every time I did anything but straight up and down, she got awful squirrely. The hill is COVERED in nasty, thick bramble bushes that cut me through chaps, eat lawn tools, stall chainsaws and destroy homeowner-grade weed wackers. They also seem to be fire resistant and chemical brush-killer resistant. And The big tall JD cant get to the rest of the 9 acres of them.
So, I am here as I begin my hunt for a piece of equipment that will help me landscape, tame my hill and aid me in some farm/growing duties after the fact.
I know about Steiner, Ventrac and Power-Trac. I have also been looking at Pasqualis and kicking the idea of modifying and old Ford LCG.
Looking forward to learning a lot from all of you.
