1986 Ford 1710
Hello everyone! Thanks for letting me on the forum! I just purchased a 1986 Ford 1710. I have many questions but my first question is what is the correct procedure to shut down my tractor?

Question #2 should I disconect battery when not in use?

Yeah I know im an idiot! I did not watch the previous owner shut it down. I have used a old Kubota and a new Backhoe, this is all the experiance I have with tractors.

Thanks

I had a 1986 1910. Pretty similar. Does it keep running after you turn off the key?

on the newer tractors there is a fuel cut of solenoid that is normally closed(meaning, with no power applied to it it is closed). You can also have normally open solenoid based on system and controls desired. In your case then it is N/C. So, if you pull the ignition key off and engine does not die then you do nit have shut off solenoid. You might know that diesel engine does not have ignition like gas engine. You have glow plug but it would not spark like gas engine. The ignition in diesel is done just by compressing the fuel vapor and air to the point it ignites. So the proper way to Kill the diesel is to put the gear in neutral , parking brake applied and locked and then reduce the throttle till the engine dies. Be careful with the grade where you are parking, keep the steering to right and left so you will not have a run away by gravity motion and for good measure chock a wheel. if you have a implement hanging from the 3-point then lower it too the ground and that;s the best brake. I don't remove the battery myself, no problem with disconnecting it but I'd put a trickle charge on the tractor for extended storage without disconnecting the battery. even if I take the battery off, I still put trickle charge on it to maintain the charge.

Push the steering column throttle lever "all the way up" (or throttle speed down) to shut off the diesel engine.

Nolo263, tell us about your tractor. Price, location, condition. Front End Loader (FEL)? Ag or turf tires.
My Dad got one 20 years ago to keep the weeds under control for a 5 acre plot in Southern California.
Changed the engine oil, engine oil filter, fuel filter, hydraulic oil, and hydraulic oil filter last March.
The hydraulic system includes the transmission and uses "hydraulic / transmission fluid" NOT "hydraulic oil".
Just replaced the water pump, easy. Have a bunch of gaskets and o-rings to fix the saggy 3 point hitch and leaky priority valve.
Picture?

I leave my battery connected, and the tractor unused for months at a time. No key in the ignition switch means the lights can not have power.

Thanks guys! Next question, how do you adjust the clutch?
Everything shifts fine but pto grinds when engaging. All gears in neutral and clutch all the way down, still grinds!!
