Thanks guys! Next question, how do you adjust the clutch?
Everything shifts fine but pto grinds when engaging. All gears in neutral and clutch all the way down, still grinds!!

if clutch all the way and tractor comes to a full stop on level ground that clutch is fully disengages. PTO need to be engaged when clutch is fully disengaged. There is no gear synchronizer with the pto gears. try to engage the PTO at the lowest RPM and report back.

From memory there should be about 3/4" free play on the pedal. Some 1710 's have a double clutch. With the double clutch, one clutch is used for the PTO and the other is used for the drive. It is common for the PTO clutch to get rusted to the pressure plate [especially if the tractor has not been used for some time].

If this is your case , you can usually attaching a PTO implement to the tractor and with power applied and the clutch in, the PTO will break free.

You can do a search on this as it will explain it with more detail. Also when not using this tractor, put a block of wood between the clutch linkage and running board to keep the pedal depressed. This keeps the clutches from rusting together.

I tried this morning at lowest idle possible and clutch depressed as far as possible. Pto still grinded when engaged. I am almost possitive it has the dual clutch setup. If pto is engaged and mower is spining, I depress clutch all the way down the mower will not stop. I dont think it even slows down.

I would try getting into some high grass or thick brush if using brush hog and keep the RPMs up. Try to really load the machine down and then depress the clutch with the engine speed up. If you have a post hole digger, this works good.

Can you open the inspection plug for the clutch and see any movement? If you have a FEL, the mounting bracket may be blocking you from getting to it.

Hope that this works, or you may have to separate the tractor. Let us know your outcome.

I adjusted the clutch on my 1710 and it does not grind at all when I engage the PTO. It only took a few minutes. If you look at the bottom of the clutch pedal where it pivots pull the clutch pedal all the way down and you will see a stop bolt limiting how far down the clutch pedal will go. I turned mine a half a turn in the direction that will allow the clutch pedal to be pushed further down and Bingo smooth operation.

from your description , you do have 2 stage clutch. I would follow recommendation of Kirkawilson .it appears that you are not releasing second stage of clutch fully.

On another note, I used the tractor all day today and some yesterday and it has wasted almost no fuel!! Incedible how efficient and powerful even one of these small tractors are. I wish it had a fuel gauge. I keep opening tank to see where level is.

I noticed on the side of the tank it has a hose that seems like it is a fuel sight level. Someone replaced clear hose with a black hose. Can anyone say for sure if that is what it is. I can go buy the correct clear hose tomorrow if that is what it is for.

It is your fuel level sight gauge , You can replace it with 1/4" or 5/16, basically whatever the dia of your black hose is with clear polyethylene hose that is impervious to diesel fuel. You need to dump the fuel out as there is no isolation valve remove the hose on the discharge side of the fuel valve, put a container under , open the valve and then dump the fuel. After the sight tube installment put the fuel back in the tank. keep in mind that you have to remove and bleed the air at the fuel filter. You new hose will get darker so it gradually becomes more difficult to see the fuel level.
