After many years of looking, I finally took the plunge and bought my first CUT - a 1989 John Deere 855 with a FEL and a stone rake. This forum has been a great assistance already as I get to know my machine.
My property is 27ish acres of heavy woods surrounding a small creek valley outside Harrisburg, PA. We have had significant flooding this year, and I have a year's worth of projects to take care of, including cleaning up debris, regrading my "yard", and stone driveway from washout. This machine will come in very handy.
I beat the heck out of my John Deere LX 188 mowing, pulling loads of wood and stone in a cart, and blowing snow. It was overkill when I lived in a development, but now I need something bigger so I can work on my own time instead of always renting.
I'd appreciate any tips from you grizzled veterans, and also feedback on the machine I bought. I paid $6,500. With 22 years and 1200 or so hours, the only major maintenance I've found so far is that the muffler has broken loose from the exhaust pipe, and the air cleaner is missing half of the bracket that holds it in place. Hydraulics are working well and the engine seems to run fine aside from the muffler rattle now that I have fresh fuel in it. New rubber for the front is being installed this weekend. And the rear tires, which I understand are harder to find are in decent shape for their age.
Cosmetically, aside from a banged up grill, it looks great. Now I just need less time at work and more time in the seat!
