Re: Helmets for go-karts? Picture!

Looks good Will,

Glad to see it is a full face type. That steering wheel and/or cross piece of the roll cage could easily change the style of your son's nose...OUCH...hurts just thinking about it.

Actually, the helmet is kind of macho...I'd tell him that too...

Re: Helmets for go-karts? Picture!

Nice helmet. Please get that seat belt, at least a lap belt would do fine.
Change the subject slightly but some years back 3 wheelers were popular. There was a story on a news program about kids and broken necks and 3 wheelers. In fact Shreveport La and the entire state of Oklahoma at one time was in full body casts. To be serious, anyone out there, please resist the urge to pick up a nice old used cheap 3 wheeler for your kiddo or yourself. They are exceedingly unstable and dangerous. They high side you and snapo your necko.
It may seem odd, but if one insists on getting a dirt machine the two wheeled variety--yes--I dare say it--MOTORCYCLE---is actually far safer. Now I am not talking about the crotch rocket coffins, I am talking trail bikes and various off road motorcycles. When ridden with the proper protective gear and supervision kids do fine on them. Now down in Oklahoma and Shreveport La were they ride with no helmets, no shoes and just cutoffs shorts and beer in hand any disaster is possible. J

Re: Helmets for go-karts? Picture!

I think the biggest problem with 3 wheelers was the false sense of security that many people had with them. Many people felt uncomfortable with a motorcycle but give them something that they didn't have to balance and there you have instant confidence. Would a novice get on a dirt bike and take a 90 deg turn at wide open throttle? No way, it is too dangerous, but give them something that instills confidence and they will. Same with hill climbing. 3 wheelers weren't perfect, I have had four of them, an ATC 70 all the way up to a 200 Big Red. I think it is the same way with 4 wheelers. I am an adult and I have had more spills on the Polaris I had than the previous four combined. The Polaris had single lever braking, auto trans, and floor boards all of which were supposed to be safer. I will admit I hot dogged it in order to get tossed. My current ride is a 1985 Honda Odyssey 350. It has a 4 point harness, full roll cage, and an extremely low center of gravity. I would venture to say that it is the safest ATV ever made and with that gives me the Superman syndrome which enables me to leap tall dirt piles in a single press of the throttle.
