HELP - 2320 - Can hydraulics get into the engine oil?

/ HELP - 2320 - Can hydraulics get into the engine oil? #11
UPDATE 9-9 Checked the engine oil again today after letting it sit since Saturday and its over full again - by about 1/4" (which is ~6oz or so i think)..

I am guessing its diesel fuel - where would that come from? is that a DIY job or need to go to the dealer?

I am going to order a Blackstone Labs test kit to send a sample it..

Any thoughts?

brian

If it's diesel fuel, and it probably is based on what YelBike wrote (that the hydro pump is not attached to the engine), then the most likely source is the injection pump. Not really a DIY repair IMHO.

See if my thoughts are reasonable..

changed the oil - ran hard for 3 hrs - let the tractor set for a couple hrs checked the oil it was OK..

Let the tractor set for 48 hrs and then oil level has risen..

To me it would be reasonable that some diaphragm/seal in the fuel pump went bad and is allowing the diesel to go into the engine oil..

That sounds reasonable to me, its a whole lot better than the IP I mentioned above!

#9 in the diagram I posted above is the pump.

so would #8 be the possible leaking culprit? the part to the left of #9 is where the fuel lines come from the fuel filter i believe..

Hiya,

If it is fuel leaking down overnight, here's what I would do:

Drain the oil
leave the drain plug out with a container under it
see what's in the container in the morning
shut the fuel petcock on the water separator off and see if it still leaks fuel over night

That should take any guess out of if it's fuel and if it's coming from the low side of the fuel system.

My 2 cents,
Tom

tomd999 - excellent idea.. I sent off a sample of the oil i drained on Saturday for testing at Blackstone so Im waiting for the results..

I may try your idea as well

I spoke with the JD service manager and told him the situation - he did NOT think it was leaking past the fuel pump. But he also is looking to get stuff in the shop..

thanks

No, #8 is only an oring that seals the transfer pump to the injection pump. If it were bad, it would only leak engine oil to the outside. #9 is the tranfer pump and the diaphragm that could leak fuel into the engine is inside of it and it is not offered as a replacement part through deere. #9 would have to be replaced as a unit. It is possible you could find a diaphragm for it, but not sure where that would be.

Update 9-17 (sorta).. Havent heard back from Blackstone yet but i needed to mow, so i bought some oil to change it today incase the old is/was contaminated..

When i took the filter off there was maybe a tablespoon of oil in the filter itself (that you could pour out).. before there has always been some oil in the filter when removed.. HMMMMM, that make me wonder if it was the oil from the filter leaking back into the crankcase after a few days and not diesel fuel

When i lowered the oil level to get to the full mark in the dip stick last week - it took about 4 to 6oz of oil to get there.. I bet that is about how much a filter holds (not including what is in the filter media)

New thoughts??
