Almost new 3720: my joy stick is getting progressively sticky and is not moving smoothly. the bucket seems to stick in one position, especially the bucket rotation downward and upward ....as opposed to FEL arms. Do I need hydraulic fluid? oil? I am NOT a sophisticated tractor mechanic, so please give answer in lay terms. is this something I can check? have to call the dealer, etc?
thanks very very much, Buckie

Most likely the mechanism needs lubricated. I would suggest starting with a spray lubricant like WD40. Aim through the hole in the plastic that the joystick goes through and give a generous dose. It is sort of hard to see, but a flashlight might help. Work the joystick a bit and the sticking should go away.

Then I would followup with a thicker lubricant such as a spray on molybdenum (did I spell that right?) grease.

Oh, yeah, you will have to pull part of the rubber boot out of the plastic to get at it. The boot is just held in by lips and should be easy to remove/replace.

If it doesn't improve, then your dealer may need to work on it.

Buckie:

My 3520 is doing the same thing. I removed the boot and used compressed air to blow as much dust/debris off of the linkage and then used some WD40 to lube it up. I chose not to use a heavier lubricant because I was afraid that it might catch & hold dust & debris that gets kicked up when I use the mower. I am going to the dealer next week to pick up the things I need for the 50 Hour service and I plan to ask one of the mecahnics about it when I'm there. If I get any great insight in to the problem I'll post it here.

I just had the same problem with 67 hrs on my 3320. This has been address before in a previous post. So I followed the recommendation of changing the fluid, suction filter and cleaning the in line filter. Problem solved, it works fine now.

How to change the fluid (6.8 gal low viscosity on the E-Hydro)and filter are in your manual, as well as the part number for the suction filter which is $75. Pretty much just like changing the oil in your truck. I ran my tractor up on some 2x6's to get clearance for a 5 gal bucket under the drain plug. Remember it's 6.8 gal so have two buckets ready. Right next to drain plug is the suction filter, remove the cap (more fluid will come out, have bucket under it) and pull out the filter but not all at once because more fluid comes out when you start removing it. The suction filter cap is large and if you do not have a filter tool big enough to get it off, use an old belt. I reached in the filter hole and cleaned out excess filings from the manufacturing process. While that was draining I removed the in-line filter on the left side of the tractor, it's right in front of the brake pedals. You will need a couple big wrenches. When you get it off, take it apart and clean it, I just used some gas to clean it, let it dry and put everything back together. The in-line filter has o-rings on each end, be careful not to hurt or loose them. Wrap some Teflon around the drain plug before you put it back in, three wraps should be fine. Also, on the in-line filter and suction filter cap, coat the o-rings with some hydro fluid before assembling. When filling the fluid it's easier if you have a long funnel. If your roll bar is folded down put two long funnels together, that's what I did. Secure the funnels or have someone hold them when filling. When starting the tractor back up you will need to move the joy stick in all directions to purge the air out of the system. Hope this helps.

I'm planning to do my fluid/filter soon as well. Has anybody reported any oddities that prompted them to do an early change? I think the manual says 200hrs on first service???

I don't mean to highjack Buckies thread but, I've been looking around here for some posts as to what could be my problem as well and this thread seems to address it as close as any I've read. My FEL 300cx is not responding as it should. My joystick appears to be fine, it's the forward and back rotation of the FEL that's giving me grief. I was using it a couple of weekends ago to move some fallen trees on my property and while trying to lift one, I put my pallet forks down to the ground and, like I know others have done, angled the tips a little too much and got tines (forks) under some very strong roots. When I tried to lift, naturally, it wouldn't. I didn't immediately recognize this to be the case, thinking it was just heavier than I had expected and continued to try to lift it. Now it doesn't rotate (move) much more than 5-6 inches total distance during forward or back operations. The up and down functions of the arms themselves work just fine. I've raise the arms of the FEL as high as possible and moved the joystick around, held it in place as suggested in other threads, several times and no help. If I don't find anything contrary to what nivrig and ACKbill have posted, I'm going to follow nivrigs course of action. Thanks guys and I also hope this has or will solve mine and your problems with the FEL. I don't think that this would be classified as an "oddity", but there it is, if you want. If you know of something else that I could try, by all means please post it. Once again Buckie, didn't mean to and am not trying to dominate your thread, just interject my "oddity". Thanks again to all that respond and feel our pain.
