JD4700
Need you guys help on this one - While merrily running the 4700 with the brush hog - shut down the PTO and turned off the engine as someone was walking up to the tractor. Guess what -- it is still setting there as the unit will not start. All the dash light indicator lights come on as normal - PTO switch is off - but unit will not start!!! I have gone through the appropriate sequence a dozen times but no start. Everything seems to be OK but the engine will not turn over - seems like one of the safety switches - such as seat or PTO may have malfuncitoned. Has this happend to anyone else?? Any Ideas???

This might be night and day different from your situation and of no value, but its worth a try, my JD425 lawn tractor does the same thing. To re-start it I have to: 1) engage the PTO 2)attempt to restart 3)shut it down and disengage the PTO and 4) start it again. It always starts right up.

It's never died at the dealership so he can't troubleshoot it and doesn't know why it would restart by using this procedure, but it does

Sounds like a typical "interlock switch" hung up...

I'll get a chance later and look at the schematic...

Meantime... check PTO and seat switches... It will be something you last did...

Just don't start pulling multiple things apart and dig yourself a hole...

Also check for wires that may have got pulled apart.

I didn't forget ya...

However, I only have access to the parts diagrams/breakdown back to about 1930/40... The only schematic I have is for my own JD...{I hope never to put to use.../w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif }

If you have a DVM or simple ohmmeter, you can track it down very quickly.

Remember what you last did... the person was approaching the tractor... you shut off the PTO {switch}, you stopped moving your HST forward {switch}, you shut off the fuel/key ignition {switch}, you left your seat {switch}... one last thing you have are some ignition fuses.

The system is fairly simple. Put your ohmmeter across the switch contacts... look at the meter, keep looking at the meter and depress that switch... the meter reading will change to the opposite. If it was "shorted" or "0" ohms then it will go to "open" or "infinity" ohms... very basic.

You don't even have to know what the switch does... it either works or it doesn't.

Only time it will be confusing, will be on a multiple contact switch array... like pto {switch does other things}, then look closely at the side of the switch for symbols or markings.

Another way to test, while sitting in the seat, turn the key to start and at the same time, engage/disengage the pto multiple times... do the same thing with the foot control, bounce up and down on the seat... You may look a little crazy... but who cares if you find the problem and start the tractor... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I wish you the best, I've got confidence you'll find it's something simple. I'm sorry I couldn't get a wiring diagram/schematic to help more.

Good luck.

John - Situation solved! It was the PTO switch - put in a new one and presto-bingo started right up. Guess I better keep an extra one of those handy. That little item can really put a damper on the situation - wonder how often that switch fails? Thanks for your help!

After one safety switch went out on my first 4400 and the dealer had to come out and handily bypassed the switch by using a jumper composed of a piece of insulated wire, I keep a couple of pieces of wire in the glovebox/toolbox just in case. Mike S.
