:confused:I am new to the whole haying ordeal so I am still learning my equipment, anyway it seems its not cutting as well as it did so I want to know a few things:

1. Am I better off buying new teeth or sharpening the old ones?
2. What is the best technique to use to sharpen the teeth
3. Can I and how do I remove the sickle bar as a whole?

The haybine is a NH 477

Thank You for all the help

Pull out the drive locking pin on the gearbox end and then we put a small chain around the end of the bar and give it a couple bumps with the ATV to pull it out. Sometimes, you get lucky and it will slide out by hand. Easier to sharpen when out. Can be sharpened while in,however, those pickup tines get into my back get to be a PITB. Ken Sweet

Just remember to keep your fingers away from places where they could get cut.

To get from under the machine, we always use a small short chain around the bar head and pull the chain, with a quick snap. Ken Sweet

Remove the blade as Ken said. Put some lubricant on the blade and turn the mower by hand before you start, that will allow the blade to move easier. My rule of thumb is as long as I have decent serations on the blade I can sharpen the top edge and it will cut well. If the seration is gone then it is better to replace the section. What is the conditon of the mower guards, they have a serrated edge that mates to the bottom of the sections which can also affect the cutting? There is no way to sharpen those. Having the blade out also allows you to check for loose sections on the blade that can either be tightened or replaced. I am assuming you are talking about a single action sickle mower which is the older style. Willie Jones

Yes I have an older 477 haybine, it is a single bar.It seems like half the teeth have the serrated edges missing..I should replace these or sharpen them??Also the look to be rivited on can I replace them with bolt and nuts with out much trouble? Thanks again guys.

You say unhook the pin that holds the bar, mine has a nut and bolt? IS that what you mean to take off? and thats all that holds the whole bare? And then pull from the oppisite side to get it out? Thanks
