I'm going tonight to look at a 9N with a brush hog. Can someone give me some pointers on what to look for? The guy said he didn't even start it all last year because he got another tractor. He is having trouble getting it started now, the plugs stay dry (no gas to them, carb blocked?).

This is the best place I have found for info on the 2/8/9N tractors.

These were good tractors in their day. I believe that day has passed. If you want that type of tractor, I suggest you consider going to an 8N. 8N has both brakes on right side. 9N has one of the brakes on left side next to yhe clutch. Neither tractor has live power. Both are under powered with very bad brakes.
They are durable and easy to get on and off of.

I have a 1951 8N now which I have owned for close to 20 years. The 9N's are older than the 8N's, so this tractor you are looking at is well over 50 years old.

They are a very sturdy tractor that have stood up to the test of time, however as with all mechaincal things metal fatigue and wear takes it toil on the best of things.

If you have your heart set on this tractor make sure the PTO has an over-running clutch attachment. A brush hog will keep pushing the tractor along because of the type of PTO power take-off it has.

Find out when the last time the engine was rebuilt, you may have to do this if you purchase it. They should start in less than 3 or 4 seconds on the starter. My guess if this one does not start and the plugs are dry the fuel line from the gas tank is pluged.

I purchased a Kubota L3000 last July. My old 8N hasn't seen much use since then either, but I bet I could go out and start it up without much problem.

Good luck

Remember, it is a gas job, and carbs that sit are prone to bug houses ( dirt daubers ) etc. Water may have condensed in the tank as well, etc.

Is gas getting to the carb? Throttle cable or linkage seized up?

Randy gives some very good advice. And if it doesn't have an over running clutch, that should not be a deal breaker. You can easily buy one for about $30, it fits right over your pto shaft.

The "N" series are very nice tractors, but remember that the 9N is the first of them, so it's the most primitive. But it's still a very reliable servicable tractor, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if it was in good shape.

An over running clutch for $30 bucks would be a good deal. I've seen them for $75 and TSC has them for $49.99. But I agree it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Yikes!!!! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Bird, that sure is inflation! I got one last year from my local Temco dealer for about $30. But even for $49.99, that shouldn't hang up a deal, and they're essential for vintage tractors.
