I don't think you will be able to stop rust around valve stem hole. Unless tire is removed and metal is cleaned on both sides of hole.

My dealer is bringing in R4s to replace the Ags on the Branson 3510 I just bought from him. He says the only problems he's seen with Calcium-filled tires have been caused by using tubes. Water condenses between the tube & rim and that's what causes rust. He says if you just fill them tubeless, there aren't problems.

He'll be installing these on my tractor within a week or so, and I don't know what to have him do. I don't do much work with my tractor except finish mowing and FEL work (landscape type stuff).

Um /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.. Good luck.

Take it from a long time antique iron owner.... There is a difference between plain water filled tire 'rust' and calcium chlorida corrosion.

While it is generally true that a water filled tire/tubeless rim won't rust as long as the water level is over the top of the rim.. CACL is another beast. Drop a bolt and nut into a jar of cacl and come back in a few weeks... you'd be surprised.

I'd make sure your paint was 110% intact on the rims.

I've had loaded tires.. and I've not seen much problem from 'condensation' between tubes and rim. As long as your tires bead is pretty decent.. you shouldn't have alot of air movement anyway.

Leaky tubes and valve stems are a primary concern for CACL filled tires.

I'd always opt for a tube over tubeless. In my experience you simply get longer life out of the rim. besides.. once the rim does get rough.. a tubless tire won't even seal on it.. and you will have to use a tube.

While there are a few minor issues with tubes vs tubeless.. like.. tube tires have to be broken down to patch.. where tubless may not have to be.. but if they are filled.. both will have to be broken down.

The next issue is bead sealing... a flat tubeless tire can be a bear to reseat in the field with only a small air pump.. however with a tubeless.. as long as the tube is intact... the tire will run and self seat.. even if a little persuasion is needed.

Me?.. If I loaded a tire.. I'd load it with water and eco-friendly rv antifreeze.. or at very least.. water and winshield solvent...

Again.. good luck!

Soundguy- Yup... you be right!

I liked tubless air filled tires around const sites as I cud easily plug a nail hole on the spot.

Like you I've had my fill of calcium filled tires, for me its either air only or a non corrosive non toxic antifreeze, like WW fluid. Sounds like this dealer is not being 100% straight, he should know better. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sounds like he might either be selling an extra set of tires.. or swapping tires to work another deal.. In any case.. I can't imagine a dealer that has had much tractor experience to say what was said.. when in reality.. it is almost opposite of the 'norm'.. around here anyways...

There are always exceptions.. but that condensation issue.. I just don't think I have ever 'seen' that one...

Actually, the dealer is getting the R4s at my request. I figured they would be better for mowing than the Ags. I also thought the filled tire ballast would help with FEL work. This dealer is 2nd or 3rd generation as a dealer (mostly Massey-Ferguson) and farmer and seems pretty confident in his assessment of calcium filling.

Rust issues aside, do you think the extra ballast will adversely affect finish mowing (tearing up the sod)?

I run calcium in my over 15 year old 2120 and rimGuard in my TN. I'll never use calcium again. And BTW, when I lost 70 gallons of RimGuard it killed everything it touched. I guess it smothered it? I sure thought it was Biodegrabable. I have tasted it and it tastes like Molasses. I agree with SoundGuy re the corrosiveness of Calcium Chloride.

Cal/Cl will rust a rim no matter what. The "story" about tubes being the cause is just that.... A story. If that fluid will rust your rims as condensation, it will do the very same thing WITHOUT a tube, as it will have MORE of a chance to contact bare steel.

I know the dealer you're working with. (I'm from Louisville also) I'm not going to get into a push/shove match here, but there's a reason why he's NOT a Massey Ferguson dealer anymore.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I'm a 6th generation farmer, and a used equipment dealer myself. This ain't my first rodeo either. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i am planning to put w/w fluid in my rear tires for the xtra weight. a friend suggested to use a tube in the tire, and to buy some type of valve at a NAPA auto parts store to do the filling. the local tire dealer has the foam that he puts in tires, it kind of expensive though.. anyone ever use the foam-filled tires? and what do you think of it? i don't want to use cal/ch due to it rusting the rims on my other tractor...
