I think we need a common place where anyone can ask anything and recieve good advice . A place thats easy to find past problems and fixes and will stay on the first page if its used . Come on do'nt be shy not everyone was bottle fed with an oil can . There is a wealth of knowledge out there so why not use it . I think HELP DESK sounds about right .

It was only a suggestion , as there are 40,000 members and only a handfull of questions per week (usually from a pool of about 200 regulars). That tells me that people are reluctant to start a new thread to ask a question and have the spotlight shone on them . Weather they feel that thier question is silly or they feel that others will make fun of them Jimi . And as for the search , the number of people that ask the same questions as have been discussed before tells me they have not found what they are looking for or have not typed the correct word/s for the search engine to find the thread . I thought it would be like a group of friends sitting around talking where someone can just chime in and ask an off topic question without having to hold a special meeting to ask that same question . Seems i was wrong .

I'm still not following your logic. haveing a off-topic forum to go in and ask a question seems LESS productive than going to a topical forum that fits your question and asking the question from the people that own or know that equipment. There are way more than a handfull of questions posted here each day!

It's good free info on a huge variety of topics... the spotlights not too bright and if someone needs an answer.. they usually get it pretty fast.. and like i said.. the cost is real affordable.

Questions being asked over and over... i see it on every forum / board i post on. Usually stems from the new people not being familiar with the forum or software.. or not knowing how to search.. and instead.. just going right to a message sub and posting.

that's my take anyway..

I forgot to mention... why don't you just go ahead and ask the mods / admins if you want to... You'll either get a yes/no/maybee...

I was just expressing my personal opinion on the subject... That and a glass of water, some lemons and sugar will get you some lemonade. ;)

I had thought about contacting an administrator and volunteering to do a hose and fitting identification thread and make it a sticky in the hydraulics forum. But, I think that would be counter productive. Nobody knows everything, the secret is in finding the answers you need. I believe anyone with a tractor should own a hose and fitting catalog from their local hose shop. They could ID any hose and fitting possible, and would therefore, become very knowledgable with hoses and fittings. If you keep giving the answers, people become dependent on you rather than learning form themselves.
As far as "advice" goes, that is about as loaded for bear as you can get. The advice you get here varies, some is great, some is garbage. Who determines which is which? I don't know. Just look at my signature and you see my feelings on advice.

WCH.. I completely agree... teach a person to do a task instead of doing it for them every time.

When I give out generator testing advice for old tractors.. it would be way easier to ask them to read me some numbers from their VOm after touching a couple spots and then me telling them what to fix.. but instead I tell them how to do the various tests, and how to interpret the results.. much more effective and labor intensive.. but worth it.

Ditto on the 'tools' I keep a good set of bolt and taper thread scales and gauges, both ID and OD in my tool box, along with a depth gauge, feeler kit, and a micrometer.. it really helps save wasted trips to the store buying incorrect sized / type fasteners and connectors.

( great post! )

It sure doesn't bother me to see the same question asked multiple times. When I've used the search feature to find information, I'll find multiple threads on the same thing, but, somehow, there always seems to be a slight twist and sometimes, there is just enough difference in the discussions that you get the answer you were looking for, but may not have gotten from just a single thread.
