My computer hard drive is running continuously. Norton's, and before that McAfee, will pop up and say Internet Explorer, or another program, is using too much memory and cpu time in "Details and Settings". After running for a while it will settle down and run normally. Sometimes this takes ten minutes, sometimes two hours. Rarely it will start normally and run okay. Sometimes it will start normally then after ten minutes to two hours the hard drive will go crazy. I have restarted it four times this morning and at the present time it is acting normal. The problem is reported in different programs but always "Details and Settings".

What is going on? How can I fix this? It has been going on for a while and slowly getting worse.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Couple of things I would do, but I'm no computer whize.

1st I would download Malwarebytes and run it in safe mode, great tool. Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

2nd, I would run a registry cleaner, then run the "defrag"

Another option would be to check and see what programs have "auto update" enable, may want to see and disable them. Just remember to do manual updates for your anti-virus. Start- Run and type msconfig, then click "start up" to see whats loading at power up.

You also may want to Google "best anti virus pc protection", or something similar and compare what you have to Bitdefender AV.

Do the <ctrl><alt><delete> dance. When the dialog screen pops up click on "Task Manager" and then "Processes". Click on the "CPU" column heading, several times if necessary to bring the active processes to the top. This will show you what program is using the CPU the most. Ignore System Idle Process numbers.

You can click on a process that is using an excessive amount of capacity and "End Process". You will probably get a warning but you can ignore it as this is not a terminal End. If this clears the problem, you will know what program is probably causing the problem.

If your computer should lock or malfunction because you ended a critical program, you can just restart the computer and the program will restart as normal.
