I was at the JD dealership today. I asked the parts manager what hydraulic oil JD recommends in a 4610. He said they just got a brand new parts book and he looked it up. JD Low Viscosity.

Can you tell us about the mid PTO install?

I've got a mid PTO kit on order for my 790 (for a 59" snowblower). From what I've been able to read, it looks like the PTO control linkage is the more difficult part of the install.

Any insight appreciated. Thanks

It looks great. I'm really tickled. The machine came from my next door neighbor . It was his baby and I think he was getting nervous seeing it apart in my garage. I made sure that he was the first one to see the finished product. I agree that it would be a shame to put a beat up deck underneath.

Did you add a loader after getting the 990?
I looked hard at the 790 and 990 at first. New machines were a little over my budge. I did get a 770 and owned it for about a year. I think that is essentially the same as a 790.

Glad to hear it looks great. Can you tell us how long did it take to install? Was there anything about the installation you didn't expect? Was there anything difficult or tricky? Nope I bought the loader last fall for the 4300 and since I wanted more power, wider stance, and a bigger mower I decided to get the 990 since it was compatable with the 430 loader and looks like our 970. Glad to hear the install went and looks good.

Hi,
The install was, I'd guess, 4-6 hours over a week's time. There are a heck of a lot of parts in the kit. It was a good value at $375 (negotiated). A 50 or 60 pound gearbox bolts to the bottom of the trans, and a second shaft is inserted horizontally from the rear of the trans. That's the easy part. To finish, there are two linkages, operating the pto engagemet and the pto brake. These entail a number of pivots, bell cranks, springs, etc. This looked scary, as the instructions were kind of basic with poor photos. However, I just went forward with each step and found that it basically can only go together one way. The install requires removing the left rear wheel, fender and toolbox. The adjustment of the engaging lever took a few go-rounds.
I'm still looking for a belly mower, but am having daydreams about a front mounted 6 foot deck. Since I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel, I'm trying to keep it at the daydream stage.

Thanks mucho for the information. That's exactly what I was looking for. The mid PTO kit for the 790 cost $390. Many years back I used to rebuild transmissions in my MGB's (dang 3rd gear syncho's would fail or maybe just my driving style /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif), so I wasn't too concerned about the gearbox part, just the control linkage. If I get time when I'm doing the install, I'll take some pictures and post.

Strangely enough, I once did a rebuild on a 57 MGA trans.

Betcha you also needed to repair/replace the rocker panels along with electrical parts. If I remember, Lucas switches had 3 positions - on/off/flicker...

Chrome was great and MG's were fun to drive although they look awfully small by today's cars/trucks.
