Thanks for all of the feedback. What I wound up doing was the ripper idea. Though I didn't use my John Deere 2320, I had a friend with an Allis Chalmers D-17. Long story short is he came over and really ripped and tore out the roots, and those that didn't come out are nice sized for the tiller to chew up. I was really impressed how well it worked.
