Just started up my vertical shaft log splitter from the winter and the hydraulic fluid was overflowing. I know that I did not overfill it prior to storing the splitter. However the Control handle had not returned all the way up and was stored that way. Could the pressure from the lever in halfway position cause the overflowing

Overflowing from`/at the tank breather right?
Is there a chance it got a bunch of rainwater in the tank since winter use? How does the hyd oil look, normal?

No chance as it was covered in a shed, hyd oil looks fine. Looked in the reservoir today and it appears ok, tried to start and pulled the control handle twice without problems. Am going out in a bit to see it will split. Thank you for your response.

Remember that the oil in the hydraulic cylinders on a double acting cylinder is just swapping sides as the cylinder extends and retracts. Sure it passes through the reservoir for some cooling but if you start out with one end of the cylinder with lots of air in it from seasonal storage, it may just be you need to exercise the unit a few strokes to get the hydraulic fluid back where it belongs.

With the control handle out of position, part of the cylinder likely drained into the reservoir

IF you filled it with the cylinder extended, then retracted the cylinder, it will be overfull.
