Help - lost my truck key

Sorry, but Ford will not have codes by VIN for any vehicles older than ten years...
A Licensed Locksmith is the best way to replace the key.

One of the guys that work for me lost the key to his 95 Ford Ranger. It was a security chip key (did,nt think the line to steal Ford Rangers was that long).

My 2004 Mazda b3000 has the security chip key, and I was thinking the same thing.

Even if the dealer had the key code it might not be the original lock in a 94. I've worn out and had to replace the ignition lock twice on my 96 Ford pickup.
The first time I carefully moved all the little tumblers or whatever they are called, over to the new lock to keep the same key. By the time that one wore out I had to use the new lock...PITA having a different door key from the ignition key.

But- :D I had a key copy made with the doors on one side and the new ig lock on the other...yes I have to insert the key the right way to get in or start the truck but it beats carrying two keys for one truck. Luckily Ford has the locks flipped...I know my franken-key looks much different on each side so I know the one side is always up whether in the door or the ig lock:)
The reason it looks different is Ford uses the first few teeth for the ig lock and the last few for the door lock. My franken-key only has the first few teeth on one side, and I know that side is always up.

Side note- I first figured out the key thing way back when we had a 98 Windstar as well as the 96 F350...had a key made that would work in both vehicles, depending on which way you inserted it. Even weirder I went to have a copy made of the franken-key at a well known respected locksmith in town once. He insisted what I was doing would not work and refused to copy the key, even after I told him I been using it for years. What a jerk he was, so I went to big box store and had it copied by a non-expert:p

we got a new plastic/metal engraver machine at work, I now have all new little plastic tags with my phone number on all my keys... I've also lost some sets in the past, never did find them but didnt have any way for people to reach ME onto the keys... NOW if someone finds them they can at least call me...

I'm pretty sure if someone finds my key it will be in the process of rummaging through our drawers. It has to be here somewhere......

I called the nearest Ford dealer and they first said they could make a key from the VIN number on trucks older than 2000. But then took my VIN number anyway and called back and verified that they could not do it. Suggested I call a locksmith.

I wonder how big a deal it will be for the locksmith to make a key?

A good locksmith will come to you and make a key mostly by 'feel'. They insert the key, jiggle it, then grind where the tumblers make marks on the key. I haven't had it done in years, but I'm gonna guess it'll cost $100+ dollars during their regular business hours.
