Gosh, my Mom had one of those K cars, a wagon with a 2.2 in it. She drove that thing a lot, and the only real issue she had was being rear-ended once. She finally traded it in at about 275,000 miles.

I was actually a sales manager at a Chrysler store back when K cars were the hot thing. I wish I'd had more stories like your mother's back then. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I was afraid of death threats from customers who'd bought them, and then decided they didn't like them 6 months later and tried to trade. I drove one for a demo for a week. The squeaking dash drove me nuts and the service department couldn't fix all the squeaks. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A friend bought his daughter a car partially based on the fact it didn't have a back seat.....he claimed he didn't care if the car was fast as long as his daughter wasn't. I don't think it hurt that his wife likes fast cars and was hoping to use it whenever the daughter wasn't.

Of course, by the time you get through with the stereo sytem, it won't have enough room left to put anyone in the back regardless of intial layout! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On the K-cars, my wife had one of the newer ones [I think the Acclaim falls under the "extended KCar" nomenclature anyway]. The car was solid, but I'm convinced the head gaskets came with a built in experation system! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Oh yeah... when I install I don't take up much room... none of the back seat will be used. Maybe just a little space in the trunk.

I'm leaning heavily towards a Civic and a used one if I can find it, if not then maybe a new one.

I haven't ruled out the Scion XA, Echo, or Corolla yet... all of those get good gas mileage in the mid 30's.

She'd probably love to have a Miata... she's been after me to get her a Toyota Spyder although higher priced than the Miata. I don't think I want her to have a convertible just yet. That might be a car for her future husband to buy her.

I had my first get her license last year and of course she was (naturally) chompn' at the bits for Dad to buy her a car. I'll admit, I thought long and hard about it but ultimately refused. Then I bot her a new 4x4 regular cab w/ tow pkg. No backseat, no worries about tin can safety or winter stuckage, and I now can tow/move everything in the garage. Hey, worked for us! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll one up ya! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif When I was kid, and had had my license for a bit, a friend gave my family a beat up old Ford pickup('63 F100). That was the best old truck in the world! It had dents and primer already, although I never did add to those dents. It had a small v8, with a three on the tree. It did decent on gas, was cheap to insure, and got me around everywhere. From there, I had odd jobs(pizza ect), bought my own car, and insurance.

I have a newer Dodge Ram with nice options(got it new in '01). Have had a couple other fairly new trucks too. As nice as my Cummins Ram is, there is still a big place in my heart for a beat up old truck for a teenager.

'Course, that might not be a girls idea of a neat vehicle, but...

'Ole Jimmy Buffet talked about that on a live album(Jimmy Buffet Live: Feeding Frenzy, "Todays Message"). Something about now days, a pair of tennis shoes cost more than his first pickup truck, and "Can I get an Amen for a $100 pickup truck!". /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Robert, when my older daughter turned 16 and got her license, I let her have my old 3/4 ton Dodge pickup. It was only 5 years old at the time. Three years later, when the younger daughter turned 16 and got her license, I gave the older girl her mother's 3 year old car, bought momma a new car, and the younger girl inherited that Dodge pickup. Of course, I hoped they wouldn't run over anyone (and they didn't), but figured that big old pickup might protect them if they got run over. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
