Help me decide - Massey vs Kubota - 40-50hp

Welp... Massey has been removed from consideration.

Just spoke with the dealer about the quote he sent me. Based on flat MSRP with no movement or discount of any kind. He explained that Kubota's "cash price" is normally only +/- $900.00 different compared to their finance price. Massey's cash price is several thousand dollars better than their finance price.

In other words, Massey makes customers pay and arm and a leg to take advantage of their financing deals. Kubota does as well, just not as bad.

When talking about the 2705 vs MX 4800
Kubota carried a higher MSRP and interest rate vs the lower MSRP and better interest rate from Massy. I wanted 0 down, less than 2% interest, for 84 months. Massey came back with a monthly payment $30.00 more than Kubota given the same terms. In fact, the MSRP on the Kubota was more than the Massey, the Interest rate from Kubota is 1.99 as opposed to Massey's .99%, and the both deals were 0 down. Massey dealer quoted me $30.00 a month more based on a lesser MSRP and Lower interest rate.. Ummmm... NO THANK YOU!

So Kubota it is... hands down.. Maybe I should have this discussion moved to the Kubota specific forum as I have questions regarding the difference between the Kubota models.

MX series vs L series... More specifically, the MX4800 vs the L4701. I do have the 3901 in the back of my head but I would really like something closer to 50hp and a frame size up from the 3901.

What does the L offer that the MX doesn't? What does the MX offer that the L doesn't. Price is similar (within 15.00 a month) but I'm at the top of my budget considering these two machines so every dollar makes a difference.

Thoughts.. Also still on the fence regarding HST vs Shuttle. Shuttle being $1200.00 cheaper, any arguments one way or another?

This is harder than buying a new car. Too many variables and too much "if I'm going to spend that much, why not spend a bit more and get this"

Help.. Please!!!!

My MX 5100 is one great tractor. Very agile, lots of power, and just plain fun to use. It is twice the tractor of the smaller L's. I went with the gear drive shuttle and wouldn't do it any other way. Absolutely get the tires loaded and add wheel weights as the MX's are light in the butt.

I think the standard L line is great for what it is. What it's not is an actual farm tractor. Bush hogging, light loader work, grapple, finish mowing, driveway maintenance, those are the things it is best suited to.

If I had more acres I would want more tractor. If I planted more than a few hundred sq. ft. of food plot I'd want more tractor. I do want more tractor for logging.

More tractor doesn't mean more HP, necessarily. I think the engine in the standard L line is great, but they're not built heavy enough to make full use of it. Which is understandable, they're the economy line. The smaller Grand L60s are a much better balance of weight to HP than either the standard Ls or the MX line, IMO. When you get to the top of the Grand L line the M6060/7060 start to look better for actual field use, though the upcoming M4 range may move them squarely into economy territory as well.

Absolutely correct. You can't compare the L's to the MX series. There is a reason Kubota makes both. And why I have one of each...

I own one probably very close to what you're looking for, the 2655 HST. Been great and I know of a lot of other very satisfied owners as well which is part of the reason why I went with Mahindra. Kubota was actually #3 on my list. #2 was Kioti. Both Kioti and Mahindra offered a lot more tractor for the money than Kubota.

Huh... that explains why the two of them together sell half the tractors Kubota does.

+1 on looking at the L4060 or L3560. Went through same thoughts with respect to L4701/MX4800.

Ended up stretching a bit and going with an L4760. If you plan on a lot of dirt work with that loader the 2 speed on the fly shifter(want to say HDS) is a huge time saver. Med hydro/Low HDS is plenty of grunt in 4x4 to drive into a pile and a flick to high range really bumps up the ground speed. Filled a set of 8 different 8'x4'x12" garden beds in about 25 minutes the other day, made a huge difference.

I will add a thought someone else touched on. Is this a long term investment? Will you keep this land a long time? I do not know your financial situation but in a few years do you think this tractor payment will seem like a huge burden or will it seem smaller than it does now.

Most of the time I have gone the cheaper route I regretted it later. When we built my shop 20 years ago we should have built it taller, wider and set it up for a future hoist. It seemed like a huge investment at the time but for a few thousand more it would have been perfect. As my wife and my earning power increased what seemed like a huge investment does not today. On the other hand you do not want your tractor to be a financial burden.

Have you priced a Kioti?

Michigan Iron is close and thats who I got my CK2510 from.

You might do better with a DKSE.

I don't believe I have a good kioti dealer near me.. Really, i'm limited to Kubota, New Holland, Deere, Mahindra, and Massey. No LS, Branson, Yanmar anywhere that I know of.

Yes you do, MI Iron over just east of Lansing, they are a good dealer.

On the consideration that the MX is tops for what you want to spend but are considering, let me say I have both an L4300 and and MX5100 and the MX has lots of advantages and probably better resale. For beer talk, the MX is to an L what an L is to a B.

The MX is not that much larger physically but weighs more and has weight better distributed. It's noticeably more power than my L4300. The MX turns a tight circle and I'll bet is not much different than my L4300. It will pull more stuff and do more work if that's what you need. My MX will pick up a 1000 lb seeder with no problem while the L is hard to lift and/or control with a lot of weight on the back. On the downside, the MX uses more fuel, not lot more, but more. It's also a little more difficult to navigate if you're trying to fit between the porch and sidewalk if you plan to work around the house.

My MX feels more like an M with less horsepower. I don't have a loader but they are strong and will lift all that you'd want to lift. Also, I have the synchro gear transmission as opposed to the hydro and that's fine for me. For seeding, I often reverse direction and it is nearly effortless with the synchro gear drive. A hydro might be better around the house but 200 feet away, a gear drive is more useful in my opinion.

Everyone seems to wish they bought more HP so if it's only a small difference in price, my free advice is for the MX. The extra $15 a month probably falls betweed the couch cushions.

Huh... that explains why the two of them together sell half the tractors Kubota does.

Actually that is far from the truth. Mahindra is one of the largest if not the largest tractor seller by volume. Google it.

Beginning about thirty-three horsepower most tractors have Diesel Particulate Filters.

If there is no DPF there is an alternative incendiary technology to burn off very fine particulates (soot).
Sometimes exhaust heat is elevated all the time, sometimes periodically.

Diesel particulates must be burned. THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH.

Many Massey engines along with Mahindra do not have DPF, and yes you are correct they have to have something, it is DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst). Massey also claims this technology they use has no extreme heat build up.
