Help me decide on R1 vs R4 tires for my first tractor

/ Help me decide on R1 vs R4 tires for my first tractor #41
Here I am today running 1800lb 4x4x8 large square bales. I’m going about 12MPH. Tractor has R-1s and rides great.
All 4 of my tractors have R1s and I wouldn’t want any other tire.

Heres 2 of my tractors setting up to bale a field yesterday. Both on mid-width R-1s. Better flotation that the “pizza cutters” you see on some tractors.

Whichever type of tire you choose will do the job. Either R1 or R4... both have advantages. For mud or any kind of soft soil go with R1s. Otherwise, if your soil is more supportive and not too sloping the choice really depends more on your personal preference for doing the work that you do.

Unfortunately, the only way to really know which one you prefer is to choose one and try it for a few seasons. I ran R1s for years just mainly because that's what I grew up with & they looked more "tractorly" to me. Eventually I moved to 4wd, which allowed for similar traction with a less aggressive R4 tread.

A brief flirtation with fluid-filled tires ended abruptly when I had to deal with a couple of flats.

Now I'm preferring R4s and cast iron wheel weights. But that's for my style of work and my land. Yours may be different.

I've taken one too many rides on a sidehill on R-4's. I'm not a fan of them for field or mud work.

I'll just sit quietly over here in minor jealousy

Thanks, given how my woods are I am already looking forward to my first puncture with RimGuard. We'll see how it goes...

Are not those radials?
They bring a different set of perks to the party.
