I'd like to plant a seasonal hedge, about 1500' long. A tall ornamental grass seems like a quick and dirty option....pus i really like the look of some of the species. Anything 5 feet+ tall will suit the bill. I need cold hardy varietals (zone 4-5). I've hunted in vain for a reliable source of seed...the only sources I've fond are generally given very poor reviews for germination. While I do have some preferred varietals, I'm leaving them off...this may be a more interesting thread to all this way.

Please help...I have to stop the deer shiners/poachers from being tempted to come onto my property!

Thanks!

Barberry bushes may be an option..

How about Egyptian wheat. Grows 6 to 10 feet high. Will get some growing the next year from seed drop, but usually has to be replanted every year though

I was into egyptian wheat until you said reseeding...i have too many projects all the time. Poison ivy...ha! Unfortunatel, when there's antlers visible from the road, bullets and boots will walk right through it.

I tried planting 500 pines this year...a month of drought killed the vast majority....i fear bushes would suffer the same fate.

No idea about grasses. Stinging nettles are no fun, never seem to die out on their own, and they get 3-4 feet tall if healthy. They do better in damp ground though.

Amur Privet, Russian or Autumn Olive are pretty tough shrub trees.

A good multi-flora rose hedge cannot be seen or walked through summer or winter, but it's banned in some or maybe most places.

Ok here is some info on grasses, this is called reven???? Or pampas grass I planted this in may of 2011 as plugs
In the picture it's about 4-5' tall in July now over 6'+. It grows up to 14' tall. I plant 3' apart in staggering rows
Next year the deer should not see me when I drive in. If you don't live in michigan call bob Soos company in
Middleville michigan. They are a whole sale greenhouse and can sale to residents outside of michigan cause she doesn't charge sales tax. The plugs cost 40-50 cents each. I was paying $1.45 each

Perhaps bushes that have BIG Thorns? Just a thought.

We planted seventy-six dwarf hollies in 2010 along 200'. They are now 4' tall and about 2-3' wide, so I could have set them further apart. They are thorny so people and animals do not go through them. Deer do not like their taste. The red berries are great for the birds. So I suggest these.

We pay $25 a year to the state for a nursery license. You can buy direct and in bulk from wholesale nurserys.
