How about clumping bamboo? It does not spread like running bamboo and grows tall and thick.

I planted pines years ago and most of them died. I think the deer ate them. The NC Agriculture TV show just mentioned clumping bamboo and I will have to research that a bit more.

Do NOT plant that #$%^&*() %^&*() Russian Olive plant from hades. That stuff is invasive as the Bamboo Stilt grass that is taking over my woods. The Russian Olive is all over the place and is impossible to remove.

Dan

Privet is the same way ....very invasive...worse than Kudzu....it is taking over in parts of GA....be careful with Privet.

Blackberry, Raspberry, or Multifloral Rose bushes are all good for this.

I have privet down a fence row on one complete end of my property and can't keep the crap in check. I'm losing property by the day. I keep whacking away at it, but it comes back faster than I can do anything about it.

Remedy and Aquamaster (53.8% Glyphosate) works! Foliar spray (need to add surfactant) on the smaller stuff, and cut stem/stump treatment on the larger clumps.

After battling many of the previously mentioned invasives for years, check out privet, multiflora rose, russian and autumn olive, and even some of the grasses mentioned before you plant. My vote would be to plant the pines again. They are inexpensive if purchased from the state forestry div., and if you plant two parallel rows that are staggered, you will have a pretty nice "hedge" in a few years.

I bought 500 pine seedlings from the state and they were pretty cheap. I think I spent more on the dibbles than I did no the seedlings. I planted the seedlings 30-50 feet from the property line spaced about six feet apart in 4-8 lines. Figured that would be very dense for 20 or so years until the trees got tall and I could plant something else for a visible barrier.

Great plan and it did not take too long to plant the seedlings. Then the seedlings died or were eaten.:mad:

I need to try again this spring...

How tall does poison ivy grow? :)

You need a trellis or better yet, grape vine post and wires for poison ivy.

I'm kind of partial to planting hawthorne bushes/trees close together.

Autumn olive jelly:
Autumnberry, Autumn-olive « Forager's Harvest

A farming neighbor in Ohio had multiflora rose hedges. They were very nice, great wildlife cover too. The hedges separated tilled fields and didn't spread. It depends on how the surrounding ground is used I think. They do have a reputation for getting into pastures.

Eastern white pine can be topped after it has some growth. It will form a hedge of sorts if planted in staggered rows.

Highbush cranberry is a good plant. It has little purple fruits the birds will eat.

Highbush blueberries do well in the OP's general area.

Red osier (red twig dogwood) is wildlife friendly plant, deer browse it.

Nourse farms noursefarms.com/ sells blackberries, strong plants huge thorns. You could put in a simple trellis.
I would avoid invasives they like to spread. You could go with hazelnut (aobut 15' tall) and then blueberries on your side. A good place to buy a large amount in laywer nursery. www.lawyernursery.com/‎
