My Ameriquip backhoe has a self contained hydraulic system powered from a pump attached to the PTO.
My problem is. The adapter, that adapts the pump shaft to the PTO is stuck on the PTO shaft. Photo attached.
I can depress the pin, which by rights should allow the adapter to slide right off, But it won't. Everything wiggles freely which is a good sign, but it won't slide off.
I have even tried turning the spring loaded pin a little at a time, thinking that the notch I am looking for is only on one side of the pin. No luck. Maybe, I just haven't found the magic spot yet.
Has anybody ever experienced this Predicament ? or does anyone have any clues or ideas ?

I've got a pto shaft that does the same thing. Try using a C clamp to depress the pin. Also try rotating the pin slightly. Either something is binding it up so it doesn't depress as far as it did or the pin rotated and instead of the cut-away section of the pin being next to the pto shaft, the solid part has rotated far enough to keep the adapter locked.

Sounds like you have a burr on the pin shaft. Do as Darren said, take a pair of pliers and rotate the pin. It should side right off.

Darren,
Thanks.
I am thinking and believing that, like you say, the pin is not properly lined up. I probably need to find that magic spot, where the notch in the pin lines up with the groove in the PTO shaft.
When and if I do find the proper combination, I am going to mark both pin and adapter so the next time I will just need to line up the 2 marks, depress the pin and remove the shaft.

Mark,
How long's it been on there? Could it be debris, rust, corrosion holding it on? Might try spraying a lubricant inside if it's open through the center. And a few LIGHT taps.

If this set up is like most I have seen the pin is actually a shaft about 1/2" in diameter that has a portion turned down to about 1/4". So the pin should not be the problem.
Like some one else has suggested the problem could be some debris in the way of the stepped down portion.

I see that you have received some fair advice. Here is a well reasoned approach: USE A LARGE HAMMER. That way you avoid having to change tools in the middle of an operation like if you started with a small hammer and it wasn't big enough.

I had a student once that explained this method to me as efficient of your time and saved wear on or small hammer too. Get a BIGGERHAMMER was his oft heard remark.

(please, in your imagination, insert the appropriate emoticons in the above... thank you)

DON"T use a hammer! You'll end up drilling a hole in the housing to drive the pin back with a drift. I have a yoke that was bad from day one that I used a hammer to "adjust" the pin. That yoke is probably nowhere as expensive as that pto adapter.

Pull on and wiggle the adaptor while slowly pushing the pin in. You might be pushing the pin in too far and missing the relief cut into the pin. BTDT! :)

DON"T USE A HAMMER I WAS JOKING IT WAS HUMOR NOT A SERIOUS COMMENT
