HELP !! My adapter is stuck !

Heres an idea that you could try VERY carefully. Use the bolts on that adapter to attach a chain. Wrap the chain around a big tree (or some other immovable thing) and hook the other end to your hitch with a clevis. Attach a c-clamp to the connector so that the pin is depressed as previously suggested.

Now drive SLOWLY away from the tree. If you have prepped everything with penetrating oil there is a chance that it will be enough to pop the connector off. Do it really slowly though!

Just a thought ... I'd probably try this carefully before I cut the adapter off.

Rch,
I haven't yet, but then I haven't had or taken the time to try anything, since I posted the problem.
I will be sure to let everyone know of the solution when and if I Do get it off.
But !! feel free to keep the ideas coming.

My pump drive adapter for my webster pump that came with my Kelley backhoe stuck once. Had to hold the button in while rocking it with one hand and lightly prying with a small crowbar with the other. Dirt had made its way inside causing it to hang. Dang PTO shield sure made it VERY hard to get to. As soon as I got it off (about 5 minutes of swearing) I remove the PTO shield and tossed it in the shop. I will never understand why they make the PTO shield so small you can barely get your had past to install/remove a pto shaft.

Stuck adapter:

Try heating the adapter. Do not get it too hot so as to not damage the shaft seal. The PTO shaft is hardened so I you get the shaft hot enough that it turns blue, you have ruined it.

Option 2, the one I think is best:

The hole for the pump shaft - Is it drilled all the way through so if the bolts are removed you can push a punch through the adapter and touch the PTO shaft? If so do as follows:

1. Remove the bolts.

2. Find a piece of all thread the largest diameter that will fit in the hole and touch the PTO shaft. Cut it off so 7" sticks out.

3. Tack weld a nut onto the end of the adapter. Be very sure to attach the weld ground clamp to the adapter, not the tractor, so weld current will not go through the PTO bearings.

4. Screw the all thread into the nut. Use big vise grips. When it bottoms out it will act like a puller and remove the adapter. At some point in the pulling you will have to pish in the retaining pin.

5. Grind off the nut.

6. Use never-sieze when installing PTO adapters.

The second method, although it seems scarry, applies force only to the adapter and PTO splines. It does not put force on the bearing nor put side loads on the PTO shaft. With som clever thought you probably can think of a way to use a gear puller instead of welding on the nut.

It sounds scarry, but to an experienced mechanic it would be no problem.

Mark,

Do what always works for me when I'm having trouble with something. Call a neighbor over. He'll just push in the pin, slide off the adapter and then stand there with a goofy look on his face. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Actually, I
haven't had this trouble before but the blade pins on a bush hog had me scratching my head one time. Good luck!
