HELP!MyPT425stopped deadinits tracks,andwon\'tstart

Okay my friends.....I just came in from the dark banks of the lake. The green beast stopped dead in its tracks, and won't start. When I turn the key, nothing happens...no sound, no nothing....Levels are all fine...oil, fuel, hydraulic oil.

I was doing nothing exceptional....actually, pretty easy work compared to what I've put the tractor through....just back-dragging some loam on the edge of the water.....when he died. It's 5:48 New Hampshire time, and dark, so I'll look at it some more tomorrow....but I'd sure love it if someone out there in PT cyberspace could point me in the right direction.....

Electrical?

Do you have lights? Does the starter "click" when you turn the key?

Sure sounds electrical.

Look for a loose wire. Look for worn/frayed wire that is in touching the metal causing a short. Check the fuses. Check the battery to see if it has any charge to it.

Check the battery and the cable connections.. Remove and clean the posts and connectors and re-attach.. Check fuses etc. like Bob said.. Most likely a simple problem good luck.. Make sure the negative side of the battery is grounded to the PT properly..

I agree. Start with removing the battery cables, cleaning the posts and putting them back on. Then test.

I had a fuse holder fail on my 422. The wires inside came loose. I replaced it with a better grade fuse holder.

Hi, all the other pters answers are what i would do too. But how old is your battery, and not how new is your pt is another question and the other question is how cold is it up your way. These two things plague us all winter in our snow removal business with our 425. I now replace my battery every two years and use the old battery if it still has some charge on one of my z-turn mowers. The battery got to be in top condition to take the extra load from the hydrostatic fluid.

Thanks guys.....I'll check wires, connections, battery, etc. tomorrow morning.....I agree that it sounds electrical, actually 'sounds' is the wrong verb because it makes no sound /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif .....I've had the PT since September bubenberg, so I assume (there's that word again!) that the battery is 4-6 months old....I'll keep you all posted....

If the 425 was actually running and stopped dead, then I would guess that it is an acute problem. That is, it must be related to the ignition, or suppling power to the ignition.

I would be looking for a fuse blown, or a shorted wire. I would use a voltmeter and start tracking from the battery upstream.

I hope you find it.
