Hi, I have a building that is 12 ft wide where I want to put an 8 ft slider, So the slider would need a 16 ft track, Would it be ok with 6 or so ft hanging off the building? Could I brace it and if so how? Should I just use 2 4ft Double doors?

I cant build 2 4 ft sliders because of trees on side of building unless I remove them. Thanks

You probably could use an 8' door IF it was light enough. A heavy wood door would likely bend the end of the over hanging rail, unless you put an upright brace under it, and used a heavy gauge rail system. (and I think it would look funky besides)

I'd lose the 2 trees (probably too close to the building anyway) and put (2) 4 footers on it. OR...you might look into hinging the 4 footers rather than sliding them.

He doesn’t want hinged barn doors in NY. I will give you a pass for suggesting that because you have no idea how much snow would need to get cleared away from them being from SC!

I started pricing sliding door track hardware and quit when I got to about $300 without even getting to the door itself. I'm now considering a rollup/garage type door. I only need 9-10 foot height, so it hopefully won't be too pricey.

Hinged doors can swing in also, even though they take up floor space.

Trees and buildings don't go together. Hack'em off for firewood.

I was also thinking that an overhead door might be better. Otherwise he will have the rails hanging beyond the building by 2 feet on each side, or 4 feet on one side.

I've used door track that extended beyond the building without a problem. You will only be suspending 1/2 of the door weight, anyways. BTW: I just bought a 16' section of door track at Rural king for $34. The roller hangers were a bit more. Used it to hang a $99. Harbor Freight vertical electric vertical winch.

I suppose you could run a cable or strap iron on an angle to support the door if its very heavy. My doors are double 3/4 plywood 10' wide and require the tractor loader to hang them. I've since replaced both of them them with roll up traditional garage doors for weather and critter control reasons.

If you are going to make your own doors, plop in some window inserts to get some daylight in there and to let you know when you've left the lights on.

How about double track barn doors? That way your panels could be about 2' ea., requiring less track overhang.

Not sure how the doubles would be set up that over lapped.
I am building the doors out of Rough cut 1 1/4 x 10 boards they are light once dry.
I could remove the trees but I also have a fence I would need to move a bit.
I have found track kit's for around $150 with everything needed.
Swing out doors like noted is a pain in the winter, I can't really plow in front of it as I have a ramp going up into the building.

I don't like sliding doors at all, snow is a real problem.Never get a tight seal and can be heavy.I went with an over-head in my new barn;open with one hand and out of the way.
