Help needed between a 8 Ft Sliding barn door or two 4 Ft double doors Will slide

I've seen lots of sliding doors with tracks that extend beyond the building. A simple knee brace is all that's needed. That said, I've had enough experience with sliders that I wouldn't have one. For a few dollars more, an overhead door is much better.

What happens when somebody leaves the door that extends past the corner of the building open on a windy day?

If you build them heavy enough, they usually stop at about 30 degrees off vertical.

I had a 10 foot roll up door installed on my barn addition this summer. It was a cheap one, cost was about $700.

So much better than the 12 ft slider on the other side, no squirrels or mice in there so far to cause problems. Much better weatherproofing. Thinking seriously about replacing the existing slider with a roll up with automatic opener.

I've been happy with a couple of rollup doors I bought from Trac-rite. They came insulated and also have side and top seals. Might not be the look you're looking for though.

If you go with hinged doors, consider the winds. I had a 16' hinged door broken into 4 panels. It was a nightmare on windy days. I had to have another person help me with the doors and even then it was a problem. Eventually took them off and replaced with an overhead door.

I would buy a 9 foot garage roll up door at Lowes. They have them in stock where I live and they are pretty simple to install yourself. I realize that you said your opening was 8 foot, but you can set the track for the door anywhere you want on the inside wall, and a few more inches of overlap doesn't really matter. They 9 foot door is probably the most common one out there, which makes it very affordable at just under $300. The biggest advantage to it in my opinion is that it will outlast just about anything else. Do it once and be done with it.

^^ Problem with general purpose garage doors is that they tend to be 7' clearance height. That may be OK for the OP, but won't work for anybody with a ROPS.

I think I am going to go with double doors, I will build them my self to match the rest of the building which is board and batton. This is a simple equipment storage barn, All work is done in my shop this is just storage, which will only be opened a few times a week.

You may have to special order the 8 foot high door, but when the big box stores are having a door sale, the special order sizes are usually on sale also. It's not that expensive.

As to the Pella door referenced by Eddie: I have a couple of Pella doors from Lowes and they work OK after installation but it was a nightmare. They were shipped with incorrect parts, they are considerably lighter than comparable Cloplay or Ideal doors, and just didn't seem as well made. That said, I've had them installed for several years and haven't had a problem once I got them in. I forget the actual name brand now, but they were third party - the name Pella did not appear anywhere on the doors or packaging.

Interestingly enough, I bought them because they were the only doors I could find prefinished in brown to exactly match my Andersen windows.

617 bucks for the I need for the garage at the family property (9wx8H)... I guess the old one will have to survive for one more winter.
