This is an old thread being awoken now;
I know of nothing modern that uses a hand control lever for the hydrostatic, also all the older ones I know of had a foot pedal (clutch) that ran a dump valve to disengage the drive.
So even if a person ran a lever with a cable down to the linkage you would not have that "safety". As all the hand controlled ones also did not have a spring to neutral the speed direction lever stayed were it was placed.

Steiner is a hand control on my 1994 420 model. No safety's on these older ones. (so you must be more careful about operating them of course)

Country Clipper has had the joystick operated ZT mower for YEARS. This is the 10th mowing season on mine and haven't had a single problem with the system in the 540 hrs. on the machine. Not even any adjustments to the mechanical linkages (doesn't use cables like some tractors). I've used a little spray lube on it at times but not often, just to keep any rust etc. from forming during the winter when stored in an open shed.

You only need 2 or 3 fingers of one hand to operate the mower with your arm resting on the armrest. I have posted this many times over the years in a couple of different forums but have only heard of 1 or 2 other people ever mentioning anything. I wouldn't even consider any mower without the joystick anymore what with all the fruit trees I have to mow around/under. Having your left hand free to move branches and being able to bend over in the seat as to not hit your head and still have precise control of the mower is great !

The John Deere 300 and 400 series garden tractors were hand operated with a short lever in the right side of the dash. But they quit making them around 1991.
